Considering 2014 or 2015 CPO E250 BT, chain issues?

Hello,

I've been a long-time MBZ driver, particularly of diesels, and I am considering the jump to a '14 or '15 CPO E250 Bluetec; but I've read some worrying things on Sprinter and UK forums regarding the OM651 engine and it's propensity for timing chain failures. On UK forums many say to avoid this engine completely, as it has the timing chain at the rear of the engine, and with the likelihood of chain failures, that makes for a very nasty repair. Did MB ever get this figured out? Or is it another W124 wiring harness or A/C evap core thing they refuse to acknowledged as a problem and persists for the life of the line (well A/C evap on that one anyway)?

Should I stick with a 2013 E350 BT instead? Thanks.

To my logic, something like that should be good for life time.

Indeed, on my OM606 and OM617s I've had in the past I never had to worry about them, just check on occasion and that's it. I was hoping MBZ had gotten to the bottom of this by now in the E250BT, seeing as how it's been an on-going thing since the engine was in European cars in '08. Maybe the E250 is immune, I'm not sure. I certainly would love to have the face-lifted w212 with a diesel and 4matic.

Lots of the MB V8s from the 80s and 90s didn't necessarily need the chains replaced, but the did need the guides replaced at some point.
