Its around 50 cents more here in the Northeast, I remember 10 years ago, it was only 20 cents more. The popularity of turbo charged and high compression engines has increase the demand of high octane gas. at this point, the pricing reflects the supply and demand ratio.

I noticed most gas stations add an extra .30 to .70 per gallon for premium. Costco is consistently .20 to .30 more per gallon, but they only sell 2 grades of gas and no diesel. Memphis, TN area.

The stations near me have a 20 cent difference between 87 and 91 octane. I've seen some stations with 15 miles of here charge 80 cents more for 91 octane vs 87.

It is also related to marketing strategy. Some station owners will price regular virtually at cost...to get you into their convenience store for the most part...but make up their fuel margins on premium grades. Less premium fuel customers are looking at price/gal vs. regular fuel shoppers who may choose their source solely based on pump prices.

Lot of variables. Before I got my Benz, mid-grade (89 octane) was 10 cents more than regular (87 octane) and premium (93 octane) was 10 cents more than mid-grade. Then the gap got bigger. Also depends on the station itself.
QT is big is this area and this week regular is 2.04 and premium is 2.44. BP reg. is 2.04, but premium is 2.99. Both are Top Tier rated. I spoke to BP national and they blame it on local stations. Spoke to owner of BP station and he blames it on distributor. I spoke to distributor and he blames it on cost at the tank farm.
The marketing ploy for convenience, super markets and big box stores that sell gas is to get you inside to purchase higher profit products. So, they keep regular low as fosterelli said.

^ Yeah, that is definitely what is going on. Costco has no such market attached to their fuel pump area so the margin difference between the two grades is smaller. This also makes the Costco low tier regular gas prices very close to the normal station prices. In my area Costco is only .10 gallon cheaper for the low grade fuels.

Still a marketing plan
