Coolant...

My wife says her 2015 E400 just flashes "Coolant level low".
Wonder if I can put in a cup of BMW coolant that I use for my 7 series, + a cup of water, for now until a full coolant flush at next service...?

Advice?

depends on how much you need to top off , if not too much add distilled water , other wise get a zerex (if i remeber right) coolant and top it off with that.
unless there is a leak , take it to dealer. since its still under warranty.
it dont smell like coolant in the car?

Thanks,

It's closer to 2 yrs old & 18,000 miles, so just need to enough to get through until Service B at 20,000 miles...

But just wondering if mixing BMW & Mercedes fluids will affect the engine...

not sure about that. I always try to stock correct fluids for my cars in my garage just in case. is it too hard for you to get the specific coolant?

I haven't checked, but if it was the same as Zerex G-05, then it's about $17 for a gallon of pure coolant at Advance Auto. I think the 50/50 mix is about $11. Check the level, maybe it's really a bad coolant sensor.

If I was you I would not be worried about what coolant to add. I would be worried why the level is low on a 2 years old car with only 18000 miles on the clock.

My E550 is 7 years old with 120 000 miles on it and I have not seen coolant level go down yet.

You have a leak and if it is not dripping under the car (or on the engine bottom shield in front) you have a way more serious issue with coolant leaking inside the engine. Coolant level does not go down without a leak unless you really "bake" the engine running it very hot for long periods of time when the coolant can evaporate thru the expansion ganister cap. Other than that coolant level should not drop.

I don't know a lot about this E400 engine. Is this the V6 twin turbo engine? I would presume it has an intercooler, using the same radiator coolant for the intercooler?

If so, it could be a leaking intercooler, which leaks coolant into the engine intake. This happened to the 2003 C32 I own, which has to be replaced as it is not repairable. It was found as a constant slow drop in coolant level, and a green slime in the intake downstream of the intercooler. Common on my car.

Not saying this is your problem, but if no visible external leaks are found, this could be a place to check, as well as anything else plumbed to the system. Take it to the dealer - you are still under warranty.

As for coolant - I'd just add a cup of distilled water and not worry about correct ratios. I have a gallon of MB Blue coolant in the garage for major projects.

Hmmm, change coolant at B service or 20k? I checked for my '14 E250 (Diesel) with SA and the coolant is not required to be changed till the 15 year or 250,000km. The specs are the same for all of the MB E series motors in 2014, MB 325.0 or 326.0

● ● For all vehicles with a manufacture date up to and including April 2014

Change interval years/km
15/250,000km Whichever occurs first must be observed;
exception: in the vehicle's maintenance manual, different change intervals are stipulated.

I fully agree, let MB SA check as to why the coolant is low to begin with.

Thanks for all the inputs.

Yes, I'll have her bring it to the dealer to have it checked out to make sure there's no leaks while still under warrantee....

No signs of leaks? I had a reservoir get a very small fracture on the plastic, no noticeable leak under the car, but slowly lost coolant. Caps fail too, allowing for evaporation loss. Tons of scenarios, I wouldn't be too worried. Just throw some distilled water in there and take her in for a warranty check, let them find the problem.

I used to have that symptoms before and I couldn't pin point where the leak coming from. I thought it was the thermostat/ radiator hose but I found out that the leak is coming from the "Rubber O-ring Seal" inside the upper radiator hose and it only costs $2.50 at the dealer.
