It is the driver's assist mode (to ensure you are alert during prolonged periods of driving). It supposedly can monitor your driving style/patterns and detect if you seem to be fatigued. You press the "ok" button on the steering wheel when I pops up. I believe you can also shut it off in the Hidden menu/engineering menu in the car (search the forum and the thread will pop up).

I wondered what it was the first time I saw it too!!!

plus, it's free!

I think in the dash menu (accessed via steering wheel) it's called Attention Assist, and you can turn it off there. It's not a very good feature, IMO, but it's non-intrusive so I leave mine on. I was coming home late once and actually dozed off on the highway (I was the only one on the road), and the rumble strips woke me up. 5 minutes later, this thing starts beeping at me and says "It seems like you're falling asleep, you should get some rest" (or whatever it says)... and by that point I was wide awake, and yelling at it for being late to the party. Then it went off again 10 minutes later, even though I was still awake and just cruising.

Bleg, you are correct. Attention assist is indeed the proper name for it. About the only thing fun is trying to figure out what triggers its, or trying to avoid doing so.... my mn>co>mn drives solo give me loads of idle time haha

It's a cup, not a pot. LOL
You need to be driving a couple hours straight for it to alarm, and only when you start driving like a dork. Unfortunately, I have experienced it on several occasions, which doesn't say a lot about my highway driving skills.

Thre is a description of it in the Operator's Manual that should answer all your questions. Mine has activated a few times and appropriately.

Yeah, I think it doesn't activate for at least 15 minutes to figure out your driving style. When you start to deviate from it, it gives you a warning.

It is a good way to kill time during a long road trip. Try to figure out what makes it go off!

it's a conspiracy. Starbucks and MB are working together. When ever it picks up a Starbucks on GPS it goes off. LOL

Attention Assist -- from the manual ...

Important safety notes

ATTENTION ASSIST helps you during long, monotonous journeys such as on freeways and interstate highways. It is active in the range between 50 mph (80 km/h) and 112 mph (180 km/h).

ATTENTION ASSIST assesses your level of fatigue or lapses in concentration by taking the following criteria into account:
-your personal driving style, e.g. steering characteristics
-driving conditions, e.g. time, driving time

The functionality of ATTENTION ASSIST is restricted and warnings may be delayed or not occur at all:
-if the road condition is poor, e.g. if the surface is uneven or if there are potholes
-if there is a strong side wind
-if you have adopted a sporty driving style
with high cornering speeds or high rates of acceleration
-if you are predominantly driving slower than 50 mph (80 km/h) or faster than 112 mph (180 km/h)
-if you are currently using COMAND or making a telephone call with it
-if the time has been set incorrectly
-in active driving situations, such as when you change lanes or change your speed

If you see the coffee cup, you aren't driving fast enough

On highway after some driving time start making very shallow steering towards the edge of the road and then correct quickly when you reach the edge. Same to the center line side.

Doing this especially at night time will give you the alarm.

I think the steering input is the biggest factor in getting the alarm. If you try to make it give the alarm you need to make shallow moves like someone falling to sleep behind the wheel would do and then correct quickly.
