2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement
My wife drives a 2013 E350 and it just hit 60K miles. Looking at the coolant the color was not a bluish color instead it was brownish. I decided this weekend to change the fluid, so I did a little research and want to post a few pictures and attempt for a guide.

At 60,000 miles I noticed the fluid in the overflow tanks was a brownish color not the bluish. I decided to replace the fluid.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r1-brown-fluid.png](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346109d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r1-brown-fluid.png)
Jack up the car and make sure it is safe to work under. I use jack and Jack stands to ensure the car is steady and safe… Please follow all safety requirements to work under any vehicle….. Know what your doing or take it to a dealer…
Remove the undercarriage covers I used 8 mm socket to remove all of the screws..
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r2-remove-lower-pan.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346110d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r2-remove-lower-pan.jpg)
Once the cover is removed, Look from the driver's side towards the radiator. My car had this yellow stripe painted on the valve. Note it is the circular device in the picture. The valve is "locked " in place with a snap of some type. I took a pair of pliers and rotated the handle 90 degrees.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r3-radiator-tank-valve.png](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346111d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r3-radiator-tank-valve.png)
I forgot to take a picture of the valve rotated 90 degrees. However you will gently pull the circular valve handle towards you or the driver's side… I didn't pull it out more than 1/4" so if you pull it more it will likely come all the way out and you will not be able to control the flow of the draining fluid.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r5-valve-90-.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346112d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r5-valve-90-.jpg)
Note I did rotate the valve handle an additional 90 degrees …. It seemed like the fluid flowed a little faster.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r4-valve-closed.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346113d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r4-valve-closed.jpg)
Note the valve handle is pulled out approx 1/4" and the fluid is flowing out or down like the green arrow indicates.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r6-valve-out.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346114d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r6-valve-out.jpg)
Please note to get the valve to close turn the handle 90 degrees like the red arrow and push the valve handle back in and rotate it closed ….. You will feel a click when it snaps shut or closed.. Approx 5 quarts was gathered from this task
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r5a-closing.png](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346115d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r5a-closing.png)
At this point I only had approx 5 of the 10.1 quarts drained from the system. So I noticed the lower radiator hose kept fluid from draining from the engine thru the radiator….. So I removed the hose
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r7-hose.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346116d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r7-hose.jpg)
It’s pretty simple to remove the Clip and drop the hose…… Make sure you have a catch pan ready to gather any fluid that will escape when the hose is removed…. Approx 2 quarts was gathered from this task.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r8-hose-clamp.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346117d1483414799t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r8-hose-clamp.jpg)
In total I was able to drain 7 quarts from the 10.1 quart capacity or 9.6 liters
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r9-7-qts.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346118d1483415192t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r9-7-qts.jpg)
I purchased original Mercedes Corrosion Inhibitor / antifreeze part # BQ 1 03 0004 and mixed 50/50 % with filtered water.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r10-50-50.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346122d1483415349t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r10-50-50.jpg)
Borrowed the girls measuring cup. Since everything in the US is packaged in Quarts, I mixed 1:1 ratio of Antifreeze to water.
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r12-blue.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346119d1483415192t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r12-blue.jpg)
When mixed 50/50 is has a nice bluish Color vs the original which was discolored
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r11-blue.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346123d1483415349t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r11-blue.jpg)
Refilled thru tank replaced 7 quarts
![2013 E350 W212 Coolant replacement-r14-filling.jpg](https://mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w212/346121d1483415192t-2013-e350-w212-coolant-replacement-r14-filling.jpg)
I wasn't sure about how to purge air from engine.
Cranked and ran car a few minutes at a time to ensure the heads or engine didn't overheat ….
Perhaps Konigstiger can post the WIS for this work scope
I have posted this as a guide not any official process so use accordingly... My goal is to assist others whom enjoy working on cars.....

Thanks for the excellent DIY. To purge air bubbles from the coolant after a change, , just let the engine idle for about 2-5 minutes with the overflow tank cap off and all the bubbles will percolate out. That simple.

Nice write-up. I assume that you meant distilled rather than filtered water? Or does your filtration system take out all of the minerals?
