2014 Mercedes, E350 why does the radio have to be on to activate the backup camera?

Technically the comand system is what is on which includes the audio system, navigation, phone, etc. Radio is just one audio source of the comand system.. You can mute the audio source using the mute button.

Took me a while to get used to that. Now I wish my other cars had a mute button.
