A cold car gets worse gas mileage than a hot car. Plus you went faster in the morning and slower in the evening. And you also went longer in the evening than the morning. The gas mileage is the worse when first starting out, it gets better once the car is warmed up.

It was a joke, actually. A great example of why the dash mpg cannot be trusted. It usually reads closer to 24, but this was a freak example. Actual mpg from that tank of gas was 16.73mpg.
