Yeah, it's going to run you well over a grand. I think I spent $800+ on the Mid-City kit w/Drone Mobile option, I actually had a third key already but figure how much for an extra key from the dealer (I dunno maybe $200-$300?). It took me a few hours to install, maybe 5 hours total, and that also included having the car down for a few days while I sent the EIS back to Mid-City for modification. Also on top of that is I got the Drone Mobile option, which was like an extra $100 plus it's a subscription service.
$1200-$1400 installed and working? You're really not going to do any better.
Remote starters are illegal in Germany. It's not just some little plug-and-play thing like on Japanese and American cars that the local stereo store installs for $200 all in, because the factory made it easy on themselves to make it an option. It's an incredibly complicated system that Mercedes, BMW, Audi never considered or planned for, so in order to get a setup that works you're going to pay through the nose. I'm probably into my setup for around a grand, and I did the installation myself AND already had a third key because the dealer I bought the car from "lost" one, but then I found it in the car after I bought it.

The data card and build sheet for my 2016 E350 includes:
J8A... DSM STAR1 FBS4 REMOTE STARTABLE
My question is what else is needed for this option to work (cell phone app or ?)... or is this available only through mbrace subscription?

Through the standard, 5-year mbrace "Connect" basic service, remote start is available for my car (as equipped) but the function (button) does not currently appear in Mercedes me.
I called Mbrace, and although I have J8A... DSM STAR1 FBS4 REMOTE STARTABLE on the car, I was told remote start was not available on my car. Not that I need it or even want it (I don't), But I was just checking to see if it was available.

I'm having the same issue, but I DO want the remote start.
It is listed on the build sheet, but Mercedes-Me tech says my car isn't compatible, and it doesn't show as an option on the app.

Starting with the 2017 E300, Mercedes changed to the "Mercedes Me Connect" solution. I presuming that the earlier "MBrace" solution that we have
never really worked, so Mercedes doesn't enable it.
If anyone has better info -- especially on how to enable remote start on this vehicle, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested.

Your 2016 E Class is built on MB's DAS4 security platform, which means that the vehicle needs to have a key present to exchanges codes with the vehicle in order for the engine to successfully start. To MB's credit, this DAS4 security platform is much more secure and stable than the prior security platform, but sacrificing a vehicle key is the the only way to make an aftermarket starter work with your vehicle. If there was a way to do it without losing a key for your year and model vehicle, we'd be doing it already.
THIS is the kit you'd need for your vehicle if it is Push To Start ignition.
Or, if your vehicle is a NON-Push-To-Start ignition vehicle, THIS is the kit you'd need, and you'd also need to send us your EIS for modification along with the extra key.

I'm in Jersey and I talked to a local guy, with whom I have been doing business for about 30 years. He said he could do a remote start, but it's not easy, quick, or cheap. He said that I should be prepared to spend about $1,500 to $2,000 depending on options... I had remote start in my Lincoln and it was nice on those very cold mornings. But not two grand worth of nice.

Yup. Not false. However, with the Mid-City setup I have, I can start, stop, lock, unlock, and open the trunk from my phone. It has real-time GPS mapping, service reminders (not that it's needed on our cars) and even a battery meter, which since the MB is my wife's I've used several times - for instance, she's away at a conference, car's been at the airport for a week, is it going to start or am I going to have to plan on meeting her at the airport and jumping her (giggity)? 12.3v, all good. In fact she even called me at work once to tell me the car wouldn't start, I checked my phone, saw low battery voltage and picked up a battery on my way home from work. It has geofencing, a curfew alert and customizable speed alerts, not that my 17-year-old will ever touch this car but if he did, I'd know and I'd have a log of the fact that he took it two hours after his curfew over to a strip joint at 85 mph. So it's not just a remote starter, although even just having the remote start capability would be worth it for me. Also just occurred to me I get an insurance discount because it's basically the same sort of active theft protection as a LoJack.
