Hi everyone, I have Mercedes E220 CDI 2013 and recently a faulty message came up on the dash board saying auxiliary battery malfunction. I looked at the forum for some ideas and decided to change the battery. I installed the new battery which is located in the boot and it worked well initially but the problem came but. now the faulty message comes and goes. any idea?

I could be wrong but I though the cars with stop/start don't have the dash battery. They get the same message when the trunk stop/start battery goes. OP, which one do you have?

Yes, trunk. If correct part # was installed it "may" be coupling relay have fault codes pulled.

I meant eco stop/start when engine cuts off when you stop and on when you take foot off brake if feature not turned off. Perhaps the feature is called something else. Its different from keyless go with stop/start button.

Do we have any alternatives or other similar batteries that can be used?
PS. Haven't called dealer to check their price yet, will do on Monday.

Stealership asked 160$ to diagnose, I vaguely remember there is a best scanner out there for 110$. Will that help to pull the codes or any other scanner that you guys can suggest to do it on our own instead of wasting money at the Dealership?.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Another "auxiliary battery malfunction". My MB is a 2014 E550. Approx. a month ago I installed a new Bosch battery under the hood and the smaller trunk battery with another Bosch. Everything was fine until today on startup. I got the "auxiliary battery malfunction" fault message. My process when starting my car is to hit the start button and as my finger is lifted I immediately turn off the ECO stop/start function. I'm wondering if "not using" the ECO stop/start function the trunk battery gets left out of the system? Checking the voltage in the trunk battery the reading was at 11.8v. Any ideas, thanks

First I got Auxx battery malfunction for 3-4 days. Then this happened, everything else works as expected..!
around 00:07 you see when the engine turns on from the Eco mode, it restarts the stereo and Eco mode function will shut down until you restart the ignition. I have a 15 day trip to calif via flight and no one will use the car, so, i skipped getting it diagnosed for 150$ at the dealer and might ask him to do it during the spark plugs replacement once I come back. meanwhile, please let me know if you guys have any idea based on this malfunction.
TIA.

Raja777M, I can’t recall. Did you replace the aux battery? You can order an OEM one for $50 and swap it out when you get back. Yours might even be in trunk. Might. If not the location under dash is easy.

I was referring to this post about the battery in the dash, for 2012 or earlier. Mine's 2014 Facelift version.
If you're saying the trunk aux battery is 50$, please confirm the URL, I will definitely replace it and see.

"auxiliary battery malfunction" in steering wheel display
First of all I can only address my car from my experience. It is a 2014 E550, 4matic, airmatic. There are two batteries. The main or "big" battery under the hood, pass side. A smaller one in the trunk pass side in the tire well. What each one does is questionable but I believe the trunk is only in cars equipped with the ECO feature (a PITA) that shuts your engine off automatically at a light or in traffic.
Since both were original and over 4 years old as preventative maintenance I replaced both batteries with the Bosch equivalent a month ago. BTW you do not need to keep the system juiced to change the batteries BUT you do have to insulate your cables ends from the cars metal body. After the change all was well for about two weeks, then one day on startup I received the message "auxiliary battery malfunction" but everything worked fine. I took volt readings during the next couple of weeks and the auxiliary trunk battery was giving me 11.90v. I did notice the ECO function did not work and some other gremlin type things but it started and drove fine.
However the message became a PIA so today I replaced the new auxiliary battery with the MB original one I took out last month. No more message and the ECO feature works as designed reading 12.9v. My guess is the new battery was damaged in transit which I noted to the seller. Hopefully I'll get my money back and I'll buy at the local MB dealer. The auxiliary battery is the Bosch S6, S6590B, 0 092 S65 154- 7hh. That's all I know.

I don't think that's what happyeds was trying to say. He said " My guess is the new battery was damaged in transit which I noted to the seller. " . So check your aux battery voltage at rest, and check it when engine is running and see if it is being charged. It may be a battery problem, may be a charging problem. Battery problem likely to be easier to find and cheaper to repair.

Aux Battery Malfunction (W212)
Hello, I have a 2014 E550 4Matic with Eco Star/Stop and Distronic Plus. I got the "Auxiliary Battery Malfunction" warning a few weeks ago and it hasn't gone away. My break hold, eco stat/stop, and distronic plus does not work now.
My Aux battery in the trunk has about 13V. I've been looking on the forms and a lot of people say that it's not always the battery, it could also be some kind of voltage converter or capacitor that is malfunctioning. Also another user mentioned the voltage of the battery could be good but the internal resistance could make it fail.
Any suggestions? on what to do?

This battery is a very common failure on all the eco mode equipped cars. Normally, it fails the internal resistance check, it's not that the battery is bad yet. Most of them when I test them after removal have 13+ volts and show as a very good battery, but once the internal resistance is over 1.76 Ohms, it fails and has to be replaced. Will be a PITA once out of warranty, but any normal powersports battery that size could be used, it doesn't have to be some special MB battery, although it must be sealed.
