Weird tranny and engine response after.....

Not sure these events are related but......

The other day, I was pulling out of my driveway and put the car in reverse only to hear a large "THUNK" sound. It was quite loud, nothing like a typical "thunk" sound from engaging a gear.

15 minutes later, my car's manual gear selector mode became inoperable. And all my shift started to occur around 2700 rpm and 3100 rpm. Mind you, my car is a diesel and it upshifts at 1500 rpm are no problem due to over 350 ft lbs of torque coming in around that RPM band. Furthermore, there is appreciable amount of power loss in mid RPM, as if my turbo charger went south.

Not sure which is bad, transmission or the engine. I realize transmissions work with various inputs including speed, torque, and driving conditions. it may just be that my engine is not generating enough torque to up shift........ not sure. But the fact that manual shifting went away is strange. Also it only happens when the car is warm. For the first 10 minutes if's fine.

The check engine light is on...........

Any ideas?

Scan for trouble code before going further. You might be causing further damage by driving it.

Sounds like a sleeve/ connector blew off on the inlet side of the turbo. Just a guess, if so, you came out ok.

A blown boot can make the manual shifting inoperable???? And they still haven't answered my question as to why it behaves perfectly normal when the car is cold.

I'll withhold judgment until I get the car back. Then, I'll post the results (hoping it may help someone else with similar situation in the future)

I forgot to report back on the result. it was exactly like you stated. I still don't know why something like this would lodge itself loose but that is essentially what happened.

I still don't know why I get this somewhat loud "THUNK" sound whenever I get the transmission out of Park. it happens when the car is ever so slightly parked up or downhill without the parking brake firmly engaged.

Thats cause your putting stress on the tranny when parking on a hill without using the e brake. ALways always use your parking brake when you park on a hill.

yes because it causes a huge vacuum leak and the computer will go into a limp mode where its derivable but not to put any stress on things
