E-Class (W212) 2010 - 2016: E 350, E 550

Anyone know what the black plate on the oil pan is?

Just looks like a normal pan to me with an indent to accommodate parts in trans.

I was not expecting that the two piece cast oil pan had a third, stamped metal, screw on "lid." I guess the casting for the two piece axle passes through the oil pan is complex enough.

There are bolts under that holding the pan to the block. You have to remove it for access.
