That's what I thought as well - where's the dam sand coming from. Everything was new and a smoke test yielded nothing. The best info I found was that the silicon (silica) was a component of the plastic guides. Additional analysis yielded levels back into normal ranges.

Can't find info when exactly the 22x.xx spec come to the play, but from my memory it was around year 2005.
Now calculate for me how many years since 2005?
I'm guessing you're referring to single grade oil when you say dino?Originally Posted by kajtek1

Before the current nomenclature was instated, MB followed sheet 21x.x( generic SAE/API and ACEA specs), which later turned into 22x.xx. One of the things you've missed about this whole conversation is the difference between then and now, which is that oil manufacturers didn't have to pay MB for certifying their oils to go on the approved oil list.
If you need a math tutor there's craigslist.
Also, what's the purpose of this discussion? No one asked about lubrication for old cars. I said 0W40 Mobil1 229.5 is good for the M278 and the M273, your responses made me non the wiser. You are forgetting the purpose of this forum, it's not made for bickering.

One report I remember a few years ago showed high silicone levels for an 02 crown Vic with some bolt ons and aftermarket tune. 102k miles. Ran perfect no noise etc. Also showed an increase in aluminum. I couldn't figure it out until I found a correlation of silicone to plastic. The only plastic I could think of was the plastic pads on the cam chain guides. I pulled the cover and sure enough one was worn into the plastic and the other was through the plastic and had just started into the aluminum. Tragedy averted. I've always been an advocate of getting an analysis at intervals.
Mine showed 13 ppm iron after almost 5k miles on 0W40 M1. Car had around 92k miles at the time. They said it's normal, even though it was 1ppm over the universal average.Originally Posted by Mud

Castrol 0w40 still has BMW LL-01 certification, but Mobil 1 0w40 lost it in the latest formulation. For that reason, some prefer Castrol over Mobil. As for Mobil 5w40, some consider that a special formula because only Mercedes sells it, it's not normally stocked on the shelves of auto parts stores, but 0w40 would be just as good or better than 5w40, nothing super special about it besides having to go to the MB dealer and paying top dollar for it.The owner's manual is online:

Funny this popped up, I'm doing an oil change later today I'm thinking. I checked my records and it's been a year but only 4k miles on the M1. I'm retired so mileage has dropped drastically lol. Oil level is fine but I've gone back and forth to leave it for a few more miles or change it. I'll probly change it mainly to get it out of my head. The cost is irrelevant, M1 at wmart and Mann from Rockauto is under 30 total.Originally Posted by Mud
Not trying to split hairs but I have a hard time calling 70k high mileage. As mentioned the mfg spec oil (and correct filter) should work well for you for many more miles.May be of interest to you:
