That's what I thought as well - where's the dam sand coming from. Everything was new and a smoke test yielded nothing. The best info I found was that the silicon (silica) was a component of the plastic guides. Additional analysis yielded levels back into normal ranges.

Before the current nomenclature was instated, MB followed sheet 21x.x( generic SAE/API and ACEA specs), which later turned into 22x.xx. One of the things you've missed about this whole conversation is the difference between then and now, which is that oil manufacturers didn't have to pay MB for certifying their oils to go on the approved oil list.

Also, what's the purpose of this discussion?No one asked about lubrication for old cars. I said 0W40 Mobil1 229.5 is good for the M278 and the M273, your responses made me non the wiser. You are forgetting the purpose of this forum, it's not made for bickering.

Funny this popped up, I'm doing an oil change later today I'm thinking. I checked my records and it's been a year but only 4k miles on the M1. I'm retired so mileage has dropped drastically lol. Oil level is fine but I've gone back and forth to leave it for a few more miles or change it. I'll probly change it mainly to get it out of my head.
