2014 E350 battery replacement

Took battery out of car then drove to pep boys. Took print out of battery on what type and cost. They have a Bosch Platinum Series AGB Battery Group size H6/L3/48Part number 48-720BAGM. Guaranteed for 48 months. Out the door price with tax $164.99. Pep boys wanted $71.40 to install. There are 2 side clips and one rear center clip for cover. Terminals take 10mm. There is only one screw that is in front to hold clamp that tightens the battery. Make sure you use putty on the 13 mm socket to hold the nut in place. Whole process took about 5 minutes. Drive to get battery took 45 minutes. Why would anyone pay $71.40 to install a 5 minute job. Make sure you remove the vent tube on the left side of old battery and the plug on the right side of the old battery you will need them for the new battery. The vent and tube is on the left side on old battery and on the right side on the new battery. I had to drill a hole for the vent on the left. They have a pre set place for you to drill on the left side if needed. Started car up and everything is working properly. Turned car off and radio kept playing for 10 minutes until I opened the door and got out.

People that pay $71.40 to have a battery installed are the same ones who take their car to the shop for an oil change.

I let dealer do oil change until warranty is up then I do it myself. But I know what you mean.

Nicely done. You're classier than me - I changed my battery in the Pep Boys parking lot. Heavy suckers.

Pepboys used to have free battery installations, but I heard few incidents on MB, where the grease monkey they send to the job hooked up the terminals in reverse and fried $5000 of computers.
I guess the charge is their insurance, or cost of sending educated employee for the job.

Its the lifting to the firewall that is the bad part. I used a piece of wood then slid battery along and plopped it in the hole. AS you get older you find ways to not strain your floppy body. Thanks again for the info on pep boys

Sounds like you got a good price too, less than half of MB. Good tip on using the wood. Would have been easier that way.

I think Autozone and Advance Auto still install batteries for free and they typically have discount codes you can use.

Educated for battery replacement mostly means knowing that you disconnect the negative terminal first on the old battery and connect it last on the new battery. I did watch a guy at Advance disconnect the positive first, didn't say anything because if the sparks flew, I wanted them to pay for the car as it was an old beater. Luckily he didn't short the positive to the body.

I just bought a 2011 E 350 with a dead battery. Question is: how many battery's does a E 350 have? My S 550 has 2. A start battery under the hood and another in the trunk for assessories. Does the E 350 have the same set-up?

If you don't have ECO start/stop then there is no trunk battery. You will have an underdash mini battery that is the backup for the column shifter only.

You have the main battery and a small one in the side of the dash. That one is pretty cheap, around $10-$15 on Amazon. It's probably just your main battery.

Thanks for the info. I got the start battery that is under the hood. That's pretty straight forward. But the one taht you mention that is under or in the dash is interesting. Had not heard of that one.

Yes, I know, eco start wasn't available til 2014. I have the exact same car. There's several threads that cover it. Here's one.

I picked up the battery on eBay when it was $12, now $12.50. Amazon has it for the same price too.
