Strange buzzy rattle

I have a 2016 E400 sedan with the twin turbo 3 liter six cylinder engine. In light acceleration, there is a noticeable rattle just around 1800 to 2200 RPM. It’s kind of a buzzy rattle sort of like a heat shield rattling. If I hold that RPM, the rattle continues nearly indefinitely. It does not seem to happen on harder acceleration. It’s hard to hear, but with the driver window down and driving next to, say, a guard rail it’s very obvious.

The. Recedes dealer *finally* heard the sound, and claims it’s a known rattle from the turbo wastegates and there is currently no fix for it. To me, it sounds like a bit of sheet metal buzzzing. Could this actually be a waste gate noise? It doesn’t happen on deceleration.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Check out this other thread with video on sound from turbo wastegate to compare. https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...-incl-vid.html Honestly, I was kind of thinking turbo wastegate after reading your first paragraph. But there are a lot of possibilities and sounds are hard to diagnose. Sometimes you don't hear them at higher revs because the overall noise is increased.

I can sometimes "make" my E400 do this. I accept the fact that it is probably the waste gates, and I don't worry about it. If the noise annoys me, I just step down harder. . . ;-)
