I verified the firmware as: High_CY15_9. I also have the HU5S1 headunit, all confirmed via a printout at the dealership when they did the upgrade. I don’t have an opinion on the 3U2 units, just that all of the information I saw confirmed the HU5S1 units to work.

Hope that helps.

Yeah once this is confirmed I like to have it working on my 2016 E-350.. RichieBoyle's issue is causing me to "pause" for a moment til he finds out what's up with his installation.

i think the OBD 2 adapter I ordered was crap. It only said “Diagnosis “ and not “DIAG” also, I reached out to the Ebay seller from post #20 and sent him my VIN, he swears that HIS adapter works. I also contact the guy who I bought mine from and am getting a refund.

Additionally, I went to the dealership and made this a big deal. I explained what the previous technician on this forum did and that they would need to follow the steps for the 207s, they didn’t like that, but they are considering it. In the meantime, I will be ordering the new adapter from: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F262451909947

I’ll update as I progress!

when you hold the 7,9, and red hang up button you don’t see “adjust volume for CarPlay” on the second page of settings?

sadly, that likely means that either your build date was after March of 2015 or your dealer has told you a fib. The correct software is “High_CY15_9” and you check it in the manner I explained above. Until then, I would not attempt an aftermarket update. The new firmware will also enable SIRI through the steering wheel button with a long press.

i am sorry, I should have said “was not after” March 2015” it looks like your dealer just lied to you then. I would ask for the XENTRY printout. (From their Star Diagnostics). I checked your data sheet and it looks right. I ordered that additional eBay adapter (the one from post #20).

I’m waiting to see what is said at the dealership and still waiting on my refund for the other crap adapter.

you should ask for the service manager. I was having intermittent connection issues with the Bluetooth system and the MBrace. The update fixed it. If you are having intermittent issues, you may want to let them know.

Also, even without a CarPlay upgrade, the firmware update allows Siri to be activated using the hands free button within the car.

I still havent heard back from my dealership for the final word. In the meantime, I rushed the order for the part from post #20, “fleeno.” I will update this forum on Monday when the part arrives.

Be sure to copy the procedure in my post #27 and take that along with you. All they have to do is follow the instructions.

If it's a long distance, better yet to call and ask for the Service Manager's email. Send him/her the instructions in an email (with notation that this has been done) and then follow up with a call.

hey, no key combination to get into engineering mode. That is only done through Star Diagnostics. The mode I’m referring to is the dealer setting mode, using “7,9, and the red hang up button.” On the second page of settings, you should see a “ringtone for CarPlay.” Option. If you don’t, it is not updated to the newest software. My adapter arrives Monday. I will video tape my entire process and post a link to my he YouTube video here.

just following up before tomorrow, the “3U2” is the code, the actual indication is just to indicate that the Head Unit is the American version. I’m excited for tomorrow. The eBay seller also gave me a large amount of confidence. I promise to video tape the entire event tomorrow including how to confirm the model firmware.

Richie, please also let us know the build date for your car, along with confirming the model firmware. Thanks.

SUCCESS!!

I now have Apple CarPlay working on my father’s 2016 E350 with a build date of May 6th, 2015.

According to the XENTRY printout (which you NEED if you are getting the Firmware updated and want to verify that the dealer ACTUALLY did it), the HU5S1 has a firmware of “High_CY15_9.” My dealer performed this update after I experienced intermittent connectivity issues with my father’s iPhone 6s and Mbrace. Initially, they refused to do this and the service manager had to over ride them claiming to be unable to replicate the issue. Be persistent as this step MUST be done.

OK! As you can see in the video, I first verified that the software was the correct version by holding the “red hang up” button and the “7” and “9” button on the unit itself. The unit enters into “Dealer Mode” and on the second page, you see the “ringtone for CarPlay” option.

I then plugged the unit in, specifically this unit, the Chinese cheap crap ones DO NOT WORK!! This is the unit I used: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F262451909947

A big shoutout to Vladimir, the eBay seller, he confirmed my VIN BEFORE I ordered the part and I paid the extra $34 to have it rushed. I wanted to be sure my father had the unit before his trip. It shipped from a warehouse in Canada. I received it via DHL and it was fast!

I then waited. The unit displayed “waiting” on the screen, then the serial number of the unit. I then waited longer and the unit rebooted several times, see the video for details. Eventually, the unit displayed “Successful, CarPlay v1.” I left the unit plugged in, then pushed the “tel” button on the main unit. BAM! There it was “CarPlay” and “Android Auto” in the carousel. I then unplugged the OBD2 unit and connected my father’s iPhone 6s to the stock USB port in the #2 spot. I DID NOT CHANGE THE STOCK USB PORT IN THE CENTER CONSOLE. The head unit recognized my father’s phone and then CarPlay functioned perfectly.

I hope this helps everyone who was worried about their cars and I hope that my deal there is ready for an earful for me as to why they couldn’t do this BEFORE I bought the car for my dad. There is no reason that if an OBD sensor off of eBay (albeit a great one) can do this, that Mercedes cannot. There is no permanent hardware that I installed and I did not remove the head unit from the car. I will be leaving this thread after tonight, but I hope that everyone gets a benefit and the confidence to do this themselves and then rip into their dealer about it after they show up with CarPlay working when the dealer refused to do it!

Now we're getting somewhere. EXCELLENT post, and thanks so much!

The build sheet (DATA CARD) clearly shows this car to have a "3U2" head unit (American Term) running NTG5/NTG5.5. And (I assume) the XENTRY printout shows it is indeed HU5S1 (now)...

This means to my satisfaction that these are one and the same (interchangeable) Hardware terms, or at minimum, that the 3U2 is fully upgradable to HU5S1 once the dealer performs the firmware upgrade.

The Video is also wonderful. Thanks again Richie for this extremely helpful post.

I assume you can disconnect the phone and revert to all the regular (factory installed) Comand Functions?

Excellent! Thank you. I have already updated the firmware and confirmed the "Ringtone volume for CarPlay" in Dealer Mode. Vladimir says that his OBDII device will work in my car. Any insight into the effect on the M-B vehicle warranty?

After all your hard work to document this, I hesitate to ask... But it would be interesting to see if the dealer firmware update shows the changes in the Data Card for the car? (Does code 531 and/or 3U2 change?) I ask because this will answer any dealer warranty questions later if some notation is on the Data Card...

I assume you will want to wait a few days before pulling this to make sure that any changes have time to be posted in the MB database for your VIN. Here's the official Data Card link... https://www.datamb.com/

I'm tempted to order this OBDII device immediately, but I think all of us should be reminded that it is pointless to order until you can get the dealer to do the firmware update first.

MarcF, you are well ahead of us in this firmware update... Good luck with part 2 of the process. Please let us know how yours works out. y

I updated mine ~3 weeks ago and neither the 3U2 nor the 531 codes changed.

I’ve pulled it and so far nothing changes. Both stay the same, which just further supports this being solely a corporate decision by MB and nothing more. Kind of infuriated me that this didn’t work from the beginning.

Also, I made quite a big deal about this at the dealership, including in regards to the warranty. So long as the problem is not directly related to Carplay, the warranty is unaffected. I even purchased an extended 4 year warranty.

I’ll check the VIN again next week to help your curiosity. Hope you enjoyed the video! Drop a like if you did!

you don’t even need to disconnect. Just hit the “MB” button in CarPlay. Works great.
