2012 E550 4M driveline shudder
I have an odd behavior from my 90,000 mile E550. When I accelerate, the car shudders until I back off the throttle; if I ease the throttle, or use the paddles to downshift, the shuddering abates until I’ve reached whatever speed I wanted to cruise at, whereupon the shuddering goes away. I can cruise at 80 miles an hour for hours at a time (road trip to New York) completely smooth and serene. The only other oddity was my average mpg for that road trip was a bit low; about 27-28 mpg; normally I’m about 30 for that trip.
Any ideas as to what’s going on? The car is going to the mechanic this coming week, but I wanted to tap the wisdom of the forum beforehand.

Just a guess, could be a weak coil pack or spark plug. Feeling a slight misfire under load that levels out at cruise. Slight misfires don't always throw a code. Have plugs ever been changed?

Turns out the car had a bad transfer case clutch and when they pulled it, they said the transmission fluid was pretty chunky. The shuddering was the tip off, confirmed by a deep rumbling and shudder when the car was in a tight radius turn, like a parking garage or even traffic light.
