2013 GL350 Rotella T6
I am using a true diesel oil in my GL350, Rotella T6 5W-40 in conjunction with a Mann ProVent 200 coalescing catch can. The Mann Provent is catching about 6-10 ounces of blowby oil per 5K oil changes that would normally be coating the intake then getting all sooted up. I just had the oil cooler & seals replaced so we were able to see the results of the ProVent. The intake & heads were coated with good thick layer of crusty soot but it was dry instead of gooey like tar (oil & soot mixture). The mechanic (30+ year MB dealer tech) told me that normally the coating is wet and tar like and that this is the first time he has been able to remove basically dry soot and that it was actually much more easily removed. the ProVent is removing moisture and oil that would normally clog up the intake system.
Now that I am getting 90+ percent of the oil out of the combustion system I am ok that the Rotella T6 has 1% sulfated ash instead of the .8 percent sulfated ash per the 229.52 spec. If the oil isn't getting burned it can't clog the DPF!! I believe in Rotella T6 and use it in every vehicle I have including the 2002 ML320 that has 300K+ on it with ZERO engine problems or repairs. The ML gets USED. I regularly tow loads that are 7,500lbs to 10K pounds at highway speeds (100% throttle for hours on end). That thing is one tough truck for what it is. And yes, I know the tow rating is 5,000lbs.
