Automatic Shifter stuck in Park

Today my w212 2011 e350 transmission got stuck in park. The shifter would not engage at all to get the car into drive, neutral or reverse. Its been acting sluggish lately, but today I could not get it to engage at all. I tried restarting, pumping the break, etc...
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

To get car out of PARK the brake needs to be applied. If car is Keyless GO and it starts then brake signal works as the car would not start without it but if you use the key in the ignition the brake signal is not needed for starting the car but if the signal is missing it won’t shift from PARK.
Just a thought....

Mercedes cls shooting brake
Same problem, was it the battery? Mercedes cls shooting brake.
My 2012 E350 did this for the first time today. Car has been in the garage for a week straight, and it's been pretty cold here. I had to turn off the ignition, remove key and start again in order for the shifter to work again.
Guessing that AUX battery mentioned by poster above was low on juice.
Does anyone know where the AUX battery is located? I remember its position under the hood on my now sold W211 but never put eyes on it with the W212.

I'm confused because the main post was about the Transmission and everyone is speaking about replacing batteries and other stuff instead of directing this guy to a transmission shop. From what I read on the original post is that there is a problem with Transmission module and it needs to be replaced. We had the same problem in our B-Class (same year) where it would shift very hard, not go into gear or would not switch to more than 3rd gear. I pulled the data, which was no a check engine, and it told me the Transmission module error and the where the error was located. There was a fix online but you need to manually solider the parts in, however we just replaced the Transmission module and now everything is back to normal.
