New W212 owner - Features question
Hello all! I'm Tee. I purchased a 2013 E550 almost two months ago and joined the site and have been lurking since then... but decided to post.
So far the car has been enjoyable as hell and it seems like every time I play with the features I find something new and exciting. Most recently I enabled the comfort entry or... something like that... that moves the steering wheel out of the way when the car turns off, and puts it back when I turn the car on. How cool is that!?
I've turned on the Dyno Mode (and off again), played with a bunch of the different display settings, occasionally switched it to "S" mode when I want to give myself a little giggle... but I was curious for those who have experience with a W212 E550, what other fun/cool features should I check out?

Nice buy! I’m a sucker for the M278 twin-turbo err biturbo V8.
Have you tried the brake hold function?

Thanks Johnny! Yeah, I call it "bye" turbo. (Eh...? Eh...? Get it? *... sigh*)
I haven't yet tried the brake hold feature. I remember seeing it in a video but then forgot about it until you mentioned it. Thanks for the links to the other features/functions too. I always like tinkering with "behind the scenes" settings.
Thanks Peachy! So far so fun with it. I did have to put a little work on it (some general maintenance, some parts replacements) but I'm not displeased with that. The car, unfortunately, is over the 100k mark.
No pictures yet Hyperion! I'll have to get it washed up and take it somewhere nice to get some good shots. Just sitting in my garage doesn't do it justice, yanno?
One question I have, is the TCS/ECS really aggressive in these cars? I've had a couple times where I punch it and the car will shoot forward then it feels like it hits the end of a bungee cord and the angry orange stability control light comes on. Other cars I've owned will limit the "go" when they lose traction of course, but not as aggressively as my E550. Maybe that's just because it goes more aggressively so it's limited more aggressively...?

Some features are harder to test than other.
My cars do have Assist, where Assist Plus should stop the car, or at least assist in panic braking when radars conclude collision course.
I am still thinking about making styrofoam barrier on remote street and test it, but it is not on the top of my TD list.
Did you run data card for your VIN? W212 have huge technology spread over the years they were manufactured and while your 2012 is early model, the 550 usually get more gadgets than smaller engines.
Happy motoring.

I did do a data card lookup here: https://www.datamb.com/ But I admit I'm not certain what I'm looking at for a lot of the info given. Do you recommend a different website?
Thanks zeemob! Yeah, it for sure is. Especially after driving nothing but a hybrid for the last 5 years. This is a kick in the pants.

Congrats on the new car!! While I am not displeased one bit with the power from my E350, I still would never turn down an E550.
Yeah the TCS is aggressive AF in MB cars in general, it cuts the throttle drastically and even after the slipping has stopped it takes a good second for the power to come back in full. I find the Japanese cars I have driven (Mazda, Nissan/Infinity) are the least aggressive but cannot comment on Honda or Toyota, my Volkswagens and Mercedes were both super aggressive in reeling things back. My Mazda's allowed a lot of slip and sideways movement before ESP or TCS would reel things in, same with an Altima and Q50 I had in snowy/icy situations. The Q50 AWD I had in Denver in the beginning part of this year felt like it did not have ESP at all and I ended up sideways in an intersection during a snowstorm.

Thanks and thanks pezzy. From what I've read the 350 is absolutely no slouch. I didn't want anything less than an 8 though (see previous post about driving a hybrid for 5 years), and to be honest I was first looking at Corvettes (especially stick-shift!)... but after driving one, and then driving the E550, I was sold. Good to keep in mind about the TCS. My old Sonata's TCS was a bit tame. It would kick in and sure you'd feel it, but the Benz is like a punch in the gut. The first time it happened it caught me completely off-guard and I drove it like a baby the rest of the day because I thought I had broken something.

Congratulations on the E550!
I have a 2012 and love it. This is the best "trick" ... after being stopped at a light, the tranny disengages to save fuel; to ensure you are ready to go on green, press a paddle to re-engage the tranny

Damn! Now that's some useful info, thanks ghlkal! Do you know if it'll disengage again after another few moments? Definitely going to keep this "trick" in mind.

Okay, I took some shots when I went to sushi and while I was on the way home.
Hopefully these turn out okay. I haven't done forum posts in (literally) years. Let me just say I absolutely love the silver arrow hood emblem. So sexy.
(Also, feel free to marvel at my Paint editing skills. )

Hahaha. I love the AMG wheels to be honest, but I appreciate the sales push.

Ooh, good call! That would look super clean. Can I find them clear with an orange underlay (like the front turn signal)?
I also have pair of replacement parking light boards... but holy cow those things are difficult to get out.

I saw a few on eBay (and amazon) but I wasn't sure what the "chrome bulb" was. Are the yellow hockey lights aftermarket?

Well thanks again, I'll definitely keep it in mind. As is I usually drive the car like it's a lame horse and I average 17ish mpg. I've been filling up 1/4-1/2 tank weekly. (Thank God for Costco gas!)
