Will an independent mechanic do a firmware upgrade?

... or is this only available at a dealer?

Thanks for your help.

If they are well versed in dealing with certain diagnostic tools (Sdconnect, STAR) and have SCN access (or know how to play with Vediamo/DTS Monaco) they can do it. It depends on where you live or how far you are willing to drive to get to someone who knows how to properly do it. Dealers usually don't do firmware updates unless they replace parts or they have a TSB demanding it. What do you want to upgrade?

Even when indy have hacked SD, not too many of them want to pay for SCN subscription.
But than dealers don't want to do out-of- the box thinking.

We need to pass right to repair ASAP. That way they'll have to democratize the diagnostic tools completely not just the J2534 standard (which only allows flashing of ECU and TCM).
So far manufacturers can charge what every they want for module coding since they are allowed to use proprietary tools for in-depth diagnostics, and MB definitely takes advantage of that. I was told that for a 15 minute flash job I would have to pay the full hour of labor(175$ in my area if I remember correctly). Quick money.

Yeah, usually you have to give them a reason, the won't do the update if you just ask. I got my upgrade at the dealer by telling them that my bluetooth cuts out once in a while and sometimes people have a hard time hearing me. The sirius satallite radio would cut out every few minutes and I threw in that the keyless go seem to flake out once in a while so update it all. I had one of those $125 off $250 in service coupons at the time so I think even though they charged me a little over $250, I think I ended up paying under $150 so it was well worth it. Actually fixed the problems I was having and I was happy with it. MB normally runs those promos all the time so I would guess the next time would be sometime in April if they follow the same schedule as last year.

This is one of the reasons I want the upgrade, incidentally.
