Talking Tuning E400

PSA.....

To the small amount of E400 owners who want a little bit more uhmmph . After talks with BMS (Burger Motor Sports) they have updated their site to show that the E400 JB4 tune HP and TQ are bumped up to 428/488tq on stock downpipes and exhaust. I've ran this tune for years on my bmw and the JB4 is highly respected in the BMW community.

Considering the cost of Eurocharged Tune. (1k+) this is a steal and greater gain power-wise for a fraction of the cost. Those wanting a bit more now have a resource for a bit more fun. ** I am not a rep for BMS, nor do I get any kickback for this post. This a PSA that didn't exist prior to my convo with the company. https://burgertuning.com/

JB4 Tuner for 2015+ C-Class Mercedes-Benz
$ 579.

Wow, I have one of these on my W212 E400 running Map5 . I knew it was quick but maybe I should take it to the dyno to see what I'm putting down. I haven't done the downpipes btw and am only running 93 Octane. Did you have any reliability issues with yours at all? This is the fastest car I've ever owned... I have to be disciplined not to get myself in trouble

2014 - W212 - E400 ( M276.820, 3 liter Turbo) RWD not Hybrid
I used to be tempted to tune my E400 for more power, but I decided against it.
I choose longevity over a tiny bit extra power, because I intend to keep the car beyond 10 years.
This M276 DELA 30 would probably be a loved V6 classic in the future. No 48 volt semi-hybrid bull-shiet, no electric water pump and yada yada, being more primitive is good.

Besides at even "mild" 333HP claimed by MB, the engine cooling system for my climate is not enough.
Hitting 120C coolant temperature within 2 laps of a 3.9KM track and only a spirited driving, not even a competition, at only 32C ambient temperature.... is a poor cooling system as-is now.

Anyhow, as I grow older, highway speed is no more fun, I prefer back roads with snake like corners.
W212 is heavy and not so fun on such roads like a 1,500 - 1,600 kg RWD car would be, but its not too bad given 1,915* KG car it is. (*with me on board and 50% fuel)
The only 2 mod I did to my E400 is a very compliant Bilstein B4 but much better than OEM Sachs, springs still standard and will be standard.
The other is ATB diff from Quaife. I like the Quaife, it is quite fun and sticky too.

I don't know how good BMS Pedal Tuner can be, this if possible with a total removal of traction control would be most fun and I will go for it.
ESP off is still too much Nanny control for E400, not fun.

SPrihadi,

Thank you for the kind and considerate post! Very sage advice that I agree 100% with. Considering my first sports car (1992 Chevrolet Corvette) had oly 300HP stock, I agree that the 330 stock HP is more than adequate. I will look into the other mods with as I agree with all, I am also looking to add some bigger brakes which will come in useful with traffic conditions in my local driving area.

Thank you again and safe and happy motoring!

Brian

Hi BBorek,

Your E400 in USA got the 344mm drilled front rotor & brembo ( in MB brand ) 4 piston caliper too ... yes ?
Mine has it, car has the 950 AMG SPORTS PACKAGE as standard and it may meant the bigger brakes, I think.
772 AMG STYLING PACKAGE-FRONT SPOILER, SIDE SKIRT
660 AMG DOUBLE-SPOKE WHEELS 18" WITH MIXED TIRES
These two options also thrown in I think is for the look only .

MB never released E500/E550 in Indonesia, so they made E400 top of the line locally assembled unit and called it AMG ,,,yeahh bull-shiet AMG ... LOL.

If yours do not yet get the front 344mm rotor and the 4 pistons caliper, go for it. It is good for stopping distance. It never faded during fun drive at the track too.
However, do watch out for the wheel spoke clearance to the 4 pistons caliper, if your front wheel is aftermarket with ET47 or ET48 or somehow different than the OEM wheel I got. Just a pre-caution.
My BBS CH-R ET47 hit the caliper by 3mm, albeit standard MB wheel is ET48 by Ronald. Both 18" by 8.5J.
Its purely the wheel spoke design trick by MB/Ronald to acommodate abnormal fat size of the 4 piston caliper protrusion.

Drive safe....

If you are in USA or Europe, where access to coding for the MB by 3rd party is available, a better grippy seat is a good next investment.
Something sporty but comfy for long distance.
Coding to remove all the annoying alert or error message.

This is where I got stuck as the Recaro local dealer told me, past W211 model he can't hack into W212 system, probably due to legal reason as Recaro germany told him simply .. DON'T.
I wanted to get Recaro Sporster https://www.recaro-automotive.com/us...o-sportster-cs

Maybe you can buy W212 E63 AMG seat, the coding won't be as complicated as putting a Recaro I am sure.
I don't know how grippy the E63 sport seat is though.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-2016-M...8063476?_ul=IL

My seat is good only for long distance and super bad traffic jam in the city.
For cornering, I loose steering precision as I needed to use the steering wheel as my own body support from being thrown left-right.
Since I am on a RHD car, the corner I like is taking fast is a tight left turn, because then I can lean my body towards the door .... ha ha ha ha.

The track I use for fun drive is a right turn infested one, a cllckwise track afterall.... it was awful for me.
The same goes for any back roads.

This is the sad part of the E400, aside from a over-civilized throttle control , ESP Nanny 24/7 and the quite dull electric power steering.
I can't "talk" to the rear wheel using my butt dyno, my azz shifted too much in corners due to the no-grip seat.
I am sure your 1992 300 HP Corvette being a RWD with not so much ESP Nanny is more fun to drive in back roads than your E400, my modified 1983 Mk2 Supra was more fun....but it was in the 80s when I had it.

I suffer big time in long right hand turn like below, purely from the E400 slippery seat. Clockwise track.

S bend is no fun too, but at least the last left turn at 1.05 G force, I can use the door for my body to lean into
I don't know how accurate is my Samsung S10e accelerometer chip ( it is a very good chip though ), but at least it can show where I suffer ... LOL

If only I can hack the MB airbag + yada yada system to put a better grip seat and no alert on the dashboard + my own kind of throttle curve + no ESP Nanny,
these will worth more than any 50-70HP extra horsepower for me.

Our M276 3.0 TT is a throttle by wire and the ESP even when I killed it, it Nany even the throttle during hard corner... I hate that.
Think about it, your RWD 1992 Corvette will allow you during cornering to make azz correction by throttle I am sure, E400 won't allow us to do that... at least for mine in complete stock form won't.
Fun driving is what I am after, but only when I want it. I am sure FUN is what you are after too .

Drive safe...

Am I blind or I don't see those HP/TQ specs on their site?

Also the w212 E63, likely similar to my CLS, probably has dynamic bolsters. So coding that is an issue.

Damn, that is another barrier.
