Is the OM642 engine the same across different years?
Hi guys,
My friend needs to change his E350 Diesel engine.
I have an OM642.920 engine from a W211 E280 CDI. My friends car is a W212 and his engine code is OM642.850.
Are they compatible, can I put the engine I have in his car?
Thanks.

Even without much looking, I have seen OM642 with 4 different piping and I hear the engine is coming in version from 170 HP up to 255 HP in at least 4 generations. .
You need to find technician who can reset engine computers even to start considering the swap.

What I wanna know is, are those piping differences just surface plumbing or are the heads actually different.

Heads are different as well, but if you take the block that was detuned in 1 application, it might have hard time to work on car who had higher HP rating.
Those engines have different EGRs and I think different turbos between MY.
Pipes are easy to modify, at least for me. Computer programs not so.
