Need help - noise and smoke from engine bay

Changed out tires to snows today. Afterwards, went to start car and it tried but failed. Heard a whirring noise from the engine bay start. Thought maybe key battery was dead, but second key wouldn't work and neither would key in ignition. Then electronics all failed. Tried to jump battery and electronics turned back on but car still wouldn't start. Whirring noise, which died when electronics did, started back up. Also see smoke and smell something. No liquids underneath? Any clues what's up?

Make sure your batteries are adequately charged before doing any testing. Start with a code scanner and see if any codes are stored. If they are, they are likely to give yo the best information available about what the problem might be.

Thanks. I left the car overnight. Came back just now and jumped. Electronics came back on and whirring in lower front left engine bay, driver's side, started back up as soon as I connected the cables. Car still wouldn't start despite giving it about five minutes while charging before trying. As soon as I disconnected cables, electronics again immediately failed to work. Not sure how I'm going to be able to put in neutral if the battery won't maintain a charge...

Start with the basics. Disconnect the battery and charge with a battery charger. Measure the battery voltage at then end of charging, and if low, replace the battery. Reconnect the battery, power on the ignition and measure voltage, if low replace the battery. Attempt to restart, if fails and voltage is low, replace the battery.

Did you do anything strange while changing out the tires? Like locking the car and then jacking it? Maybe you set the security immobilizer into action. I agree to start from scratch with a strong battery, check codes, main fuse, etc...

I'm not sure. I don't think I did. I did bring the car down a little too fast when changing the front right tire, but it wasn't really THAT fast...

Update:

I brought the battery to AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts. Both said it is dead, despite my having charged it to 100% with a trickle charger. I bought an H8-AGM battery from AAP and dropped it in and it started right up.

Friend still thinks it's the alternator and I'll have trouble a few days down the line. He said it depends on how powerful the alternator is. I hope he's wrong...

One thing I did notice is that the ECO start/stop is working again. It hadn't been for a couple months. I think it stopped working when the auxiliary battery in the trunk died, and continued to not work after I replaced it in September...
