What oil for a 2012 E550 4matic
Which engine oil do I need for my 2012 E550 4matic? Local Autozone does not have in stock or online. Does anyone have a link to buy the same oil and brand that the dealership uses (preferably in the USA)? I live in Indiana where we see extreme cold and hot weather. It's not clear in the owners manual although they list it takes about 9qts. Google searching is different that what Autozone is telling me I need. i think I found matching oil on Napa.com but I'd like to ask here before I order. Also which oil filter brand should I use?
Thanks,

Konigstiger posted link to direct oil page, but it is scrambled in page build.
Get yourself familiar with this page and keep rechecking for updates.
Mobil1 was dropped by MB from several applications lately.

Oh my gosh I'm more confused and frustrated than ever. I'm about to give up and just pay the dealer to do it as I have in the past.
I thought finding the correct oil filter was going to be easy, but from the "User and Market Notes" provided above, i have to know the part no of the original oil filter???
And I was going to order the following oil, but now Mobile One may not be recommended? I read the page you provided kajtek, but I dont see where oil manufacturers are listed.

you live in area with very high and very low temperatures so the original 0W-40 is best for you.
Get the filter from the dealer or other source where you can get the same brand. I think it is Mann filter.
I used one that looks like the yellow one in konigstiger’s post and it split open at the seam where the filter media ends join. That was one time trial with other than dealer filter.

I use Mobil 1 0W-40 on my 2010 E550. I could use 10W-40 as I live in south and we do not get temperatures below freezing hardly at all and if we get it is only like 30F.

For that year, it's still 229.5 oil. Only get oil that's on MB's approved list. Mobil 1 0w40 is one of them. You can easily get it at Walmart. That oil listed, Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 isn't the same as Mobil 1 FS 0w30 which is what's listed in MB's approved list. Castrol 0w40 is also popular. If you see MB 229.5 on the back of the bottle, you're all set.

So first, you need to know what engine model you have. Once you have it, go to
223.2 sheet and follow the line with your engine for MB spec sheet.
Once you have the sheet # it will open you long list of approved oils. Not too many of those oils will be available in USA, so it takes some reading, but as fellow owners point, Mobil 1 and Castrol are easy available.
I would not depend on reading the bottle alone, as when the oil gets dropped from approval, the old stock might still have the numbers, but I don't think you'd like to use oil who lost approval?

The best deal is when Mobil offers a $12 rebate on a 5 quart jug. I think last year it started in April. I think the Mobil 1 filter is now down to $10 for the M272 engine, so with the $5 rebate with the oil filter, it's down to a decent price of about $5 for the oil filter.

The MB oil filter part number for your car is 276-180-00-09. A recommended alternative is MB p/n 176 180 08 00. The first is a paper filter while the second is a synthetic filter media. Most will recommend that you stay with either an OEM Mercedes, a Mahle, a Hengst, or Mann. All three are OEM filter suppliers to Mercedes.
Which part of Indiana you are from ma influence what motor oil you choose. Southern end, and you may choose a 5W-40. Closer to the Great Lakes, you may want the 0W-40. If you aren't a spirited driver, a 30 weight may work for you. I personally use 0W-40. Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40 is on the bevo 229.5 list. So is Castrol Edge 0W-40 A3/B4. If you choose a different motor oil, just look on the back of the jug and make sure it has an endorsement that reads similar to "MB-Approval 229.3, MB-Approval 229.5". Your engine requires the 229.5.
That's it. Not hard at all once you get used to all the Mercedes talk.
Don't forget to get the correct size oil filter cap wrench. Maybe someone here with the same engine can tell you what size to get. I found one source that says you need a 74.5 mm 14 flute, but it would be nice to get a confirmation.
