New mounts (and solved stink engine smell)

So I finally put the car in the shop this week and had the engine and transmission mounts replaced. I also had the transmission fluid and filter replaced and the rear differential. In total about $2,400 of work - thanks in large part to Mercedes Benz of Tysons Corner completely messing up my transmission pan by snapping one of the bolts and missing screws from a previous visit. Hate that place, but different topic..

anyway - man what a difference the mounts have made! Totally tightened up driving experience. Gone is the sloppiness and lumpiness of acceleration and de acceleration. What I thought were my brakes again, turned out to be the engine shifting in its seats. The car is smooooth as silk now.. My mechanic said the old mounts were about a ½ inch compressed when compared to the new ones.

mine is a 2014 with 50k miles.

the stink smell after driving from the engine? Oil on the front of the engine from sloppy oil change work. Oil is basically getting cooked. Just need to clean it off. Again - dealership caused...

never will I use a dealership for my services and repairs.

Thanks for posting this.

It's interesting that the mounts were compressed and made such a difference after 50K miles ...

its really not a mileage thing as much as a time thing. My 50k of inching along in DC traffic could easily be someone else’s 100k in less congested locations. I have a 2013 Toyota Highlander that needs new mounts too (120k) and starting to suspect my 2015 VW is likely starting down this path too (50k as well). I’ll do those two myself though. Much easier than the MB.

my boss has a previous generation E with like 260k miles on it. He’s had to replace the mounts 3 times, said each time is like a new car again.

Wow interesting. Had no idea mounts would go that soon. Learning something new all the time.

My mounts went out at 46K. The car sounded like it had an exhaust leak. The mounts were about $140-ish for all three, and I put my lift to use and learned more about my car.
