Sunglass holder installed

I sourced and installed the OEM sunglass holder the other day. Pretty easy, and pretty useful in my mind.

I got the part from ECS. Comes in black or tan.

Hmmm.. I keep mine in the under seat box, which works OK. I am not sure 100% on this but it is a thought. How much did it cost?

I paid $27.50. ECS offers free shipping for orders above $50 so I got a cabin air filter too.

I think you might see them for less on eBay but they all seemed to be in China, and I wanted to try to avoid having to deal with shipping from overseas. (I'm still waiting for the console organizer to show up!)

How much headroom does it take it away after installing? Also is it hard to pull out the existing grab handle? Does it require screws or do I just yank it really hard?

there's no screw, you just need a small flat head screwdriver to pull off the plastic plug of the grab handle, installation takes about 1 minute literally

For real MB parts, it's cheaper to buy it from the online MB dealer. That's basically what ECS does, they probably get a decent discount, but they still have to mark it up so it's a bit more than what a dealer who sells online would charge. This one is $21.45 and I already had a few things in my cart so additional shipping was just 75 cents. List price is $27.50 so you could just get it at that price from any local dealer.

It goes where the grab handle is. Headroom wise I would say none at all.

Box under the seat fits 4 sunglasses easily. That’s where I keep mine. If I didn’t have the box I would get this too. However, I do like the handle and use it from time to time. I often wonder why Asian makes don’t have a driver handle. I would find myself reaching for it and it isn’t there, but all the other seats have them. Must be a safety thing.

I use the driver assist handle all the time to pivot when leaving the vehicle. This habit avoids tugging on the steering wheel for the same purpose. Other threads here discuss tiny broken parts within the steering wheel, so I use the handle to minimize any pressure on the steering wheel. Read this...

So, the eyeglass holder in place of the grab handle is not for me. Placing it at one of the other seating positions puts it out of reach, even for this 6 feet tall person. The holder looks nice, but at $27, it should have a molded-in Mercedes logo, LOL. The sunglass holder I use comes {free} with the glasses, and I throw it on the upper shelf within the glove box. To each his own, of course.

Good point. Although I'm new to the marque, I am under the impression that every part on the car has a star logo -- even the wiper blades.

I wear eyeglasses at all times so I swap pairs when I get in the car. That makes a convenient sunglass receptacle ---- well, convenient. My BMWs have one over the rearview mirror. Heck, even the Taco has one. So maybe I'm jaded.

I just installed mine. Of course, I broke the existing grab handle when pulling it out. This is the same reason why I don't work on plumbing parts in the house. In any case, it does take away about 1/2 inch of headroom when you turn your head to the left or getting out of the car - it brushes against your hair. But the worst part is........ it doesn't fit my sunglasses. The casing doesn't have enough volume. So, it's great for reading glasses or something that is very flat but if your sunglasses have a bit of a wrap around shape or have a oblong aviator shape to it, they won't fit. And, if your GF or wife is keeping her Audrey Hepburn style big glasses, it's not even close.

It takes a little while to make it a habit (if you're used to an overhead sunglass holder) but the under seat storage box does work very well for this purpose.

I keep mine in the underseat box, mostly because I had one in my last three Benz's, I also use the handle instead of pulling myself out with the steering wheel, this also keeps me from rubbing all the velour/flocking off of the door jamb, not noticeable with a black interior but really ugly in my tan interior.

I can't understand the logistics of pulling myself out of the car with this grab handle, but obviously there is some truth to the rubbing velour off the door jamb - my 2016 has a tan interior and all of the velour was rubbed off in that area when I bought it. Dealer replaced it under warranty.

Can someone make a video or something about how it works to get out with the handle?

Says the thirty-something to the sixty-something, in a few decades you'll have your answer! And your door jamb was likely worn by an old guy who used the steering wheel to get out!

Very slick. I was also reminded that I put my second pair of "cloudy" sunglasses in the underseat glovebox, which I totally forgot about until now (I only got the car 3 weeks ago). How deep is the well of the sunglass holder? I have slightly curved frame sunglasses and I'm not sure they will fit. Thanks

EDIT: Sorry, I just read post #14 and answered my question. It still is a neat device, though....

This one from eBay.

Except I haven’t gotten it yet. It sat on the docks in LA for 2weeks. Supposedly it is on the move again.
