Flaking wheels

My wheels were starting to flake and show their age. I took it to have the wheels refinished and they suggested that I have them powder coated instead of repainted. I was told it would be much more durable and last longer. I can’t wait to get it back tomorrow. Have any of you guys had your wheels refinished? How did they turn out? Have they held up? This is a before picture and I will post an after picture when I get it back.

I had two wheels refinished last year, my wife slightly curbed one and the other looked like it had been refinished previously but poorly done. Both wheels were chemically cleaned and re-powder coated. Both came back in brand new condition.

Prices vary, in some cases it depends on the damage

Most places in Vegas ask $150 per rim to refinish (but not powdercoat) but I've been able to negotiate $100-$120 for rims with light rash. Flaking is caused by the corrosives found in most rim cleaning products. I wash my own cars and just use regular car wash soap on the rims and have never had flaking in 30+ years. Automatic car washes are also a culprit.

In Northern climates the failing of the clear coat is salt. It can’t be stopped.

After

I picked up the car this evening from having the wheels powder coated. I think they turned out great, they look new to me. Below is a pic of one of the newly refinished wheels.

Powder coating is absolutely the way to go. My 928's fronts were done in 2008 and holding up beautifully.

The purpose of clear coat is to protect aluminium from salt. So is the egg, or chicken first?
Anyway, I live in dry climates for long time, so corrosion is never the issue for me, but my observation is that the problem starts when careless mechanic gets lousy lug wrench for wheel removal and he busts the coat around the holes.
Ones you have a break in clear coat - the disease spreads and using acid cleaners is great food for the virus

I have never understood guys that use that 'stuff' to clean/eat their wheels.

You mean acid cleaners?
US is country where advertisement always overcome common sense.
Than you don't know till you try, or read about it.
I used the acid cleaner when they come on the market like 20 years ago and I was impressed at first when it saved me lot of scrubbing.
Than later on I removed the wheel and tried to clean it inside. The acid cleaner did not wash too well inside and baked solid brake dust to the finish.
Than living in hot climates I could never understand why some owners bake $70,000 car on sun only becouse they have $700 worth of crap in the garage.
Some times it is lack of imagination, sometimes it is leased car, sometimes plain stupidity.
