M271.860 engine shaking

Hello All, i own a w212 M271.860 Evo engine i have a vibration issue which is weird the rpm is stable but i get the shaking sensation especially with high rpms and is much noticed at idle, and also when changing gears from P to R or D i get this vibration for a second at the time and it disappears but still there is vibration. i checked my car’s compression is great ,done some vacuum tests, i replaced the fuel pump , injectors , coil pack , spark plugs , all the pulleys two idler pulleys and tensioner checked all the other pulleys and the freewheel clutch alternator pulley is great they appear to be in good shape except for harmonic balancer. Even the timing chain and cams and adjusters are okay.
The car is a 2010 with 40k km , what i notice is the tensioner pulley is swinging excessively and the harmonic balancer wobbles a bit with high rpms and noticed well with car full load like steering ac compressor and alternator with it, anyhow i visually inspected the balancer no visual damage but the rubber is extremely hard it’s tough as steel and when i scratch it with my nail i get a feeling of it tearing like ash ,and also their appears to be an oil leak from the seal behind the harmonic balancer do you think it’s the harmonic balancer that might be the issue?

That sounds like motor mounts, did you check those?

Motor mounts are well known to go early on all engines in the W212. The fluid filled design offers excellent performance at the expense of longevity. Given this common problem I’d say that Occam’s Razor recommends a thorough inspection of the motor and transmission mounts before suspecting the harmonic balancer or other engine components. Good luck and let us know what you find!

there is for one last thing i forgot to mention if i leave the car for many days parked , the cold start runs a bit rough until the rpm gradually starts to go to its normal position for just a minute and then it smoothen out

I have seen aftermarket front axles give a vibration when put into gear but it didn’t really do anything in park or neutral.

Okay today i found a vacuum leak from the output of the turbo charger there appears to be seal within the hose connecting to the output of the turbo charger that has gone bad, and the harmonic balancer as well seems wrecked my country suffers from extreme heat it would explain the rubber components of the vehicle going bad i replaced almost every seal of the vehicle the ones remaining are the harmonic balancer seal and the seals for the turbo hoses i will get them replaced along with a new harmonic balancer and belt, but what still bothers me the rough engine while cold starting i think it might be something to do with the quality of fuel or quality of oil because i already checked the intake manifold air filter. The car was even parked for almost 4 months because of the corona virus lockdown, I’ll replace the parts that needs replacing hopefully this will solve the vibration issue and I’ll keep an eye for the cold starting thingy.

i dont think the issue is with the front axles because the vibration is also noticed at idle and i sense it’s coming from the engine

Good info on the heat accelerated wear and tear. It is no suprise, I am in th tropics and bumper to bumper traffic jam do aged rubber/plastic components in engine bay FAST.

**but what still bothers me the rough engine while cold starting i think it might be something to do with the quality of fuel or quality of oil because i already checked the intake manifold air filter.**
If it is a 10-15 seconds event, no worry. The computers need time to read stabilized sensors to get better combustion.
What usually happens to gasoline when kept too long ( say ur 4 moths Covid lockdown ) is it will oxidized and create varnish like coating.
My portable 1kw inverter honda gasoline genset, I drain the fuel tank and run till dry the caburator when going for storage.
The varnish will block the caburator jetting and in boats, varnish on fuel tank walls ican clog fuel suction hoses + check valves in the fuel filters, if the fuel is left too long like a year or so.

After about 3 months, gasoline looses its proper properties, my countryman call it stale fuel. Its also not good for combustion.
https://www.bp.com/content/dam/bp/co...gehandling.pdf

If you can get some sort of fuel treatment chemical to remove the varnish and do a low gear ( if your transmission allows ) to get 4,000 - 5,000 RPM all the time for say 5 minutes,
it will help to clean some minor blockage in the injection system. Do it on the road and not by stand still and throttle.

Happy troubleshooting...........

Okay i think i might be getting into something, i noticed this issue appears after the car sits 3 weeks parked and the battery is drained, once i charge the battery with a trickle charger and then start the car and resume my normal routine driving there’s no issue, but if the car sits for a couple of days i have to recharge it and the issue disappears. One last thing i am using a battery of 100ah 800cca, but today i used the epc with my vin and found out that i should have installed a 60 ah battery only, could it somehow because i installed a much larger battery than needed it somehow affecting the system knowing that my car is equipped with that smart charging mechanism?

I noticed that my tensioner pulley is vibrating but i have already replaced it, but i took a look on the harmonic balancer and it was vibrating excessively the rubber became extremely stiff and it seems that the rubber is slipping from one side of the pulley plus the engine front seal behind the pulley is leaking oil, and it seems it’s vibrating much worse when there is load put on the engine. And could it affect the working of the other accessories connected by the belt?

Well, if indeed you have a bad harmonic balancer, that surely cause the shaky-shaky and any other equipment sharing the same sepentine belt with it would also be forced to shake a bit.
Serpentine belt itself is forgiving ( very flexible ), it is not a hard shaft and will NOT deliver vibration like a shaft.... nevertheless seperntine belt works on friction and it needs all the belt grooves to sit properly ( don't shake it ) on all spinning equipment.

couldn’t agree more, but the belt itself wasn’t replaced for almost 6 years and the average temperature in my country is 50 degrees Celsius, the belt feels loose and stretched with some cracks, i compared it to a new belt and there is a difference and also it seems that age and heat has hardened it in comparison with a new belt. One lost last thing i forgot to tell that the shaky sensation increases with increasing outside temperature, as it seems that temperature has an affect on the faulty harmonic balancer plus the harmonic balancer is covered with some oil leaking from the front seal behind it.

my country’s temperature is harsh on these rubber components, i had to replace many rubber seals because oil was leaking all over. some of which include the oil cooler seals, the intake seals , the o ring seals found at the boost hoses clamps, engine cover gasket, spark plug seals, all those parts were leaking oil all over the engine and it seems that they went bad at almost the same time. As well as motor mounts and transmission mounts. The only remaining faulty component with rubber in it is the harmonic balancer.

I can feel you. I am at 32-35C ambient day time and nite time 28C at best all year round. Bumper to bumper traffic is another horrible heat generator.
In my country, Audi transmission-control-module cant last to.

yeah I’ve watched many similar videos i an pretty sure that my harmonic balancer is toast, it’s slapping the belt and the tensioner, it wobbles alot, the rubber is cracked and bulging and i have got all the symptoms accompanied by a bad balancer, i’m just gonna replace it all to be on the safe side, new balancer and belt and a new front. Already bought the seal and belt locally here but the balancer i had to order it from outside the country.

yeah man those euro cars aren’t efficient in hot countries, my country is literally an oven. You name it we got it from dust to heat to humidity. if this issue get resolved I’ll be some damn relieved because i am considering to upgrade my entertainment system I’ll treat the car with new speakers I’ve already found a speaker that has similar power rating to the stock amp but higher db and better sound quality and additionally I’ll be installing one of them high end android screens. If i managed to fix this issue I’ll be making a tutorial on replacing the comand 4.0 to the newest mekede android screen. 4 gigs ram, octa core processor 64gb storage with android 10 they’re just neat.
