CV axle :(

I was replacing my wheel bearing and while pulling things apart and about to put things back together, the cv axle fell to the ground. I'm assuming it's not suppose to come apart and this boot is one and not two piece? Do I need a new axle? If I do need a new axle, how do I get the other piece that is still attached to the car out? I cant seem it get it out.

Looks like you popped the inner joint apart... common "mistake". The piece left in the engine just needs to be "pulled" or pried carefully outward. There's a snap-ring, which "holds" the splined end of the CV joint inside. As far as reassembly, you'll need a new boot kit which Mercedes sells, which will include the boot, crimps rings, grease, etc...

I think MB still makes an inner boot kit available, I think it's harder to find the outer. Do not try an aftermarket one unless you get one from a junkyard. While aftermarket ones tend to be cheap, they have a history of causing a vibration. On the W211 you could use a muffler clamp to pry against the CV joint, if there's room, you can use a slide hook also with a slide hammer.

I haven't done it yet on the W212, but usually there's enough space to get a prybar tip between the back-side of the CV joint and the engine or diff.

Inner and Outer boot kits, confirm with VIN:

Would it be easier to just replace the whole cv axle?

depends. if you're paying someone $190/hour shop rate, maybe. if you're doing it yourself, I gotta assume a whole axle is a LOT more expensive than a boot kit, and your time is free, right? :-p

A new axle is $1000 per side... so your call. I would avoid installing an aftermarket or reman axle as they most ALL are of very poor quality.

If the original is in good shape, best to rebuild it or pay someone to.

Same thing happened to me.

Flushing brake fluid and saw grease on the control arm.

I ordered the 2 boot kits from FCP Euro.

Figured I might as well do both sides.

bmwpowere36m3 is spot on...new axle will be at least $900 plus shipping...each!

New boot kit from FCP Euro is less than 10% of the axle price.

Caught a sale on Amazon for a 5lb slide hammer to keep things (hopefully) easy.

Good Luck!

If the axle is seized to the intermediate shaft, then the whole assembly w/ intermediate shaft will need to come out. Try spraying penetrant at the splined interface and consider getting a slide hammer puller to "shock" it out. Take care, as you may damage the oil pan if overly aggressive. So if that fails, then the intermediate shaft and axle will need to come out.

Time for a bigger hammer. Try that 5 pound slide hook hammer. Used that to take out the axle when replacing the axle seal.
