Issue resolved with a new torque converter
I just got the car back from the shop, they replaced the torque converter and refreshed the transmission. New seals, solenoids clutch plates and more. Now the car drives great. About 18.5h of labour and $1100 in parts.

i don't see where you are, here, the dealers are like $160/hour or something (good indies are maybe $130/hour, crappy generic shops are $90-100). so 18.5 dealer hours, thats um, $3000 ?
sigh, we used to have two decent long time family run Mercedes dealers within a 30 min drive (the local dealer closed decades ago), but both those formerly decent dealers became parts of giant corporate dealer chains, and have become totally impersonal, and I'm not sure I trust them anymore.
I have a pretty good indie, he's a real guru on older Mercedes engines, and he and his people are trained in the current stuff, but when it comes to all the computer stuff in the W212 and using xentry, I'm not sure how up to speed he is on the finer intricacies. he and his crew are certainly qualified to do routine service. he gets factory parts delivered same day if they are available anywhere in the SFBA. he doesn't pad his bill, in fact, if he can stack jobs so it takes less time total, he adjusts the labor accordingly, especially if I'm flexible on how long it takes. and troubleshooting stuff that he needs to learn as he's going, that time doesn't get billed. my wife's old E320 wagon, the throttle body wiring harness had rat damage, and his regular supplier for rebuilt throttle bodies was out, so he was fine with me getting a used one on ebay, I had it there in 2 or 3 days, and boom, car was ready.
