Buy a copy of WIS/EPC off eBay and you'll have access to MB technical procedures, wiring diagrams and tons of factory info.

Are they Bi-Xenons or Halogens? What's the aftermarket system installed?

WIS will show you how it is SUPPOSED to be wired, but a modified car? all bets are off.

The "aftermarket" seems to imply the entire headlight assembly. He needs to clarify.

Likely the voltage transformer on the aftermarket HID system, you could swap left to right and see. They get hot converting 12 to 48 volts.
