2014 E550W ticking problem

only ever used synthetic oil from Mercedes Benz. Never anything else. I’m not sure why I’m hearing this. And what do I do. I don’t want to sell the car. The car still drives amazingly. Just know what this means for later on in its life.

On this one, MB was extra clever when designing this awesome failure.
The oil leak from the failed tensioner seals prevents the VVT Phaser gears from getting steady working pressure, the soft steel internals then grind down the neutral locking pin. No locking = clunk-clunk-clunk..
The FIX:
replace both the junk chain tensioner and priceless VVT Phasers.
Goodby chaos, sanity is restored until next stage.

The frequency of your ticking sound sort of points to DISTRIBUTION...
While I am not in the elite 550-gang, I've heard these V8 passenger camshafts journals need attention for lack of lubrication.
I'd consider throwing some maintenance parts at your timing when you get the valve covers open to assess the wear situation.

the problem to solve is the staple low oil pressure on passenger side camshafts caused by internal leaks here and there.... thicker oil grade is a valid cheap fix at 200K ! ✌️
