Engine cleaning

I have had my engine cleaned by the Mercedes dealer for the time I had it, but I want to start doing it on my own.

I have looked at this video, and it shows that Mercedes only trust Sonax 607. They even apply without any fear.

Anyone used it?

I wouldn't do it at all . It's not a 1956 Land Rover Defender

I would not do it this way, but it's funny how MB just goes for it.

Yowza. That’s an interesting video. “Do not spray Sonax mixture on hot components”
yeah, right….

Well I use a 50/50 of simple green to water with a soaked rag. Wipe everything down then dry off. Pull all the plastic and break out the wet/dry vac. Maybe once every two months. I don't drive around with the hood open so I don't care too much.

I do it like the video and never have issues… keep in mind technique (distance to objects) would vary if using a 1500 vs 4000 psi pressure washer. There’s more, the orifice size and angle of the tip will vary the pressure.

Point of reference, I use a 3000 psi 2.5 GPM PW, but with the right tip (down to 1200 psi) I can comfortably hold my hand less than 12” from the tip.

I’d say as long as you use a 25 or 40* tip and keep it ~6” away from components you should fine. I would avoid blasting the felt heat shield/sound lining on the firewall.

We used to have a steam “jenny”…. that was awesome for cleaning REAL grime and you didn’t need chemicals, usually. The pressure was low, <1000 psi, but it put out scalding hot water/steam.

I wash all my engines. Been doing this forever, and as long as it's on the up and up with no frayed wires and exposed leads you'll be good. That said I only use a foamer like this, sprayed from about 4-6 feet away and let the soap do the cleaning. Use a good soap. Then rinse using the same nozzle without the foamer attachment. Then just dry with a hand towel.

Amazon Amazon

I don't "seal" anything when I do this. Remember the engine bay is designed to be exposed to the elements, no different than driving when it's pouring out. Just skip the pressure washer and no shine products post-washing.

On our 160k-mile M272 I couldn't resist cleaning it when I did the oil plug fix. +10HP when clean, true story.

And don't forget the bike
