M278 engine mounts.

I would agree with ALFAItalia, your mechanic told you "to take a hike". Perhaps they do not like doing kind of job, i.e. not a low hanging fruit.
I am sure if you look around a bit further, you may find another Indy with a better estimate.
Here is someone describing his approach to it (engine out
)or a bit simpler, but still some more work than the E350 w/o 4M (notice the special tool)
A thread for W212 : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ml#post7575504
Also, a short discussion for the S550 (W221 not W212) is worth reading https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...or-mounts.html
It seems this guy has his own variation on the "special tool" to access the mount upper bolt. Unfortunately, he does not show actual usage

Get a couple quotes from the dealer as your high-end and then shop around from there. I think $1500-2000 is fair with OE parts.
MB shop time for W212 M272/273 4matic is 4.4 hours and 8.0 for M278. OE 4matic mounts ~$400 and OEM ~$150 if available (they weren't for M273).

The technique I've employed is to disconnect and hang the steering rack, and uncouple the exhaust. It sounds invasive but its like 30 minutes of work with a lift and Milwaukee. I've seen both vehicles get replaced with nothing more than the right exhaust removal and some lucky hands. I was recently completely unaware of the heat shields covering the late M273's, but now we're good. We just do both the rack and the exhaust and if the technician has a better way he just saved himself half an hour on his work schedule.
Consider replacing the starter while youre in there, its also covered by the right exhaust. Make sure you get credited somewhat for overlapping labor though, it's just another 15 minutes to replace this thing, maybe agree to half an hour?
M278's are a little new to need mounts, how do you feel about it? I recommend them around 120k, the trans mount craps the bed pretty frequently and youll know when it shudders on a cold morning on the first acceleration

I am 109k so it's about time. EuroFed, refused to do the work (too hard for them I guess). Got told they don't have the tools to do the work there. Probably for the best since I don't think they have ever worked on one.
So I am hitting MB of Gainsvillle to see pricing, and their schedule.
I swear people don't want money anymore.
I may buy a Honda or a Toyota for a beater at this rate. LOL.

So this is to prepare you for the parts bill. They're going to charge you the list price, not this wholesale price. Last month a 2014 CLS550 was in for engine mounts at 110, so that seems to be the magic number when you just start noticing engine rock at idle. Was the case for my W221. So if your indy wants say, 5 hours at $150, with parts it'd be $1220. I'd negotiate some additional stuff for a good deal, you're already into them for decent money, sway bar links, starter, crank position sensor replacement (its 5 minutes), oil change, etc. The transmission mount is like 30 minutes once youre down there and the pans are off. The Lemforder or Corteco part is $60, and the OEM unit is $150 from MB, this is assuming I just guessed yours was a 2013, but they should all be in the right ballpark.

Is yours a biturbo?
