Thanks guys! Bought the new part and swapped it. Gas smell is gone now, but I have another issue. Gas gauge doesn’t work. Is this related to the part I changed? Everything looks correctly connected. Is there a part I should examine?

I got similar response when I was poking my fuel pump wiring to the tank...

Use a scanner to reset your Rear-SAM so it can start again looking at your fuel sensors.

Hopefully nothing got zapped.

Cali is usually right, but I'm wondering if you were to disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10-15 minutes and see if it comes back?

Many people know many things so we're often partly right and wrong.Cali tries to submit worthy counsel to help eliminate problems honestly.

It's a good day when someone in need receives honest pointers. For that we all provide kindly as a group of wisemen.

Our W212 computers really like to be rebooted with a battery reset, specially the SAMS. Their software is not as rugged as ECU/TCU.

Not to start an operating system flame war here, but sometimes these cars remind me of Windows computers If in doubt, reboot. Wonder if they should have a RED reset-push-button in the glove compartment, or next to the ODB connector

Juan, you've got a great point about memory leaks in PC that used to eat up all the RAM or the USB peripherals causing slowdowns.

Modern cars share bones with desktops mother and daughter boards because they are a dozen different suppliers of peripheral modules that are supposed to interoperate well accross a bus. Some conditions are not well stress tested. Updating modules may provide relief or introduce new incompatibilities.

One evidence of F-SAM bug is when you unlock you car in the morning and hear the fan of LED Headlights resume spinning on cold units... LoL.

Parts of the SAMS are always powered ON unlike the other modules that SAMS manage to power down for sleep. This is why when your Benz LimpModes on the road, you get to "play another round" simply by power cycling the ignition. 😊

F-SAM must listens to Keyless for wake up calls to manage power back on...

When SAMS get glitched all day, they go crazy and don't nap any good. Busy overtime work gets payed by the battery.
Hence reboots and floats are a great temporary medicine.
