Brembo Type Front Caliper - Overhaul Kit, yes we can get them !!

Gang,

Those of you with the 4 pistons AMG/Brembo/Mercedes calipers, would not get from Mercedes the piston seal & dust boot and the cross over o-ring to overhaul your front caliper.
I do not know what calipers you guys get on a true AMG cars, as long as it is Brembo this information will come handy.

Anyway, here are tips which may help you source the parts from elsewhere.

My case. I am on a 344mm rotor and 4 pistons Brembo/Mercedes P/N A2044215398
Caliper Details here : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...e-bedding.html

Anyhow, I have managed to see by photo close up, my caliper's dust boot part number, which is : 20.4872.48
I have googled and only found genuine Brembo parts here :
https://www.racing-professionals.de/...ery=20.4872.48
https://addictionmotorsport.co.uk/du...-seal-20487248

Therefore, the piston seal would be : The 44mm ones.
https://www.racing-professionals.de/...+48&results=14
https://addictionmotorsport.co.uk/fl...4mm-fluid-seal

The relationship of the piston seal to dust boot size is fixed on Brembo, no matter what car it is on.
https://corner3motorsports.com/wp-co...rembo-Seal.pdf

I read on Dodge SRT forum that I am to avoid Stop Tech brand , Brembo genuine is better for heat tolerance. StopTech also makes the overhaul kit for Brembo.
Since my caliper is by Brembo, so all parts must then come from Brembo.

The only seal or o-ring I can not get is the cross over o-ring, baby sized one.
My caliper type is ALMOST like a 2 piece Brembo found on WRX, Acura and the Nissan 350Z. So betwen the 2 components, there is at least 1 of Cross Over o-ring which no one seems to be able to procure the original one from Brembo.... yet.
https://my350z.com/forum/brakes-and-...bo-o-ring.html

My caliper very likely to have 2 cross-over o-ring as MB-Brembo 4 piston is not a true 2 piece caliper but is more like a 3+1 piece caliper. what a weird term I used.

The guy I contacted at racing-professionals.de adviced me to never crack open the calipers because of this cross-over o-ring concern.
But it is not a fun job to overhaul the 4 pistons if I keep the unit un-cracked...well it is possible, single body 4 pistons Brembo can't be cracked open.

The closest How-To-101 for our MB/Brembo 4 pistons overhaul is the Nissan 350Z/G35 Infinity Brembo unit, see below :

Now come the good news.
For 44mm piston and dust boot, we can buy 2 of these Nissan repair kit and only take the 44mm set, the 40mm set we can give away to friends or sell them.
It is cheaper than buying from direct Brembo dealers and for you USA dudes, its a no brainer , get it from Nissan USA dealers.
Nissan Brembo 350Z is not all 4 pistons 44mm but 2 is smaller, they are 40mm ones.

NISSAN USA DEALERSHIP... hell yeah !!!!
https://www.nissanraceshop.com/produ...50z-g35-front/

Since Nissan is not as azz-hole as MB when it comes to repair kit availability, Nissan buy from Brembo and sell it under Nissan brand to their clients.. LOL. Too bad the crossover o-ring is still not available.

So, I have ordered 2 of these 350Z repair kit from Z1. I hope I can get them late Jan 2022.

Good luck overhauling your MB-Brembo 4 pot.

I would like to update :

So , my caliper is indeed a 3 piece unit.
The older W220 also uses similar design.

The unique cup shaped caliper cross-over seals (4) i am sure is similar in shape/design like the W220, unlike other Brembo which many uses common o-ring donut shape.

I do not know where the guy got these 4 special cross-over seals, as the repair kit he uses does not include those unique seals. The repair kit BCK4410 Budweg.

Above video link :

.

Another better view of the unique cross-over seal from the same W220 caliper.

Video link for above

Must hunt down these special seals .....

On a Technical Note :
EPDM is one of the most compatible polymer material used in DOT3 or 4 ( Glycol type ) Brake Fluid application. This compatibility is a safety issue if we screw up and going custom seal without knowing its compatibility chart.

EPDM special blend can do 150C maximum WORKING temp and this is the most commonly used seal material. Good to -50C, hence this is overall good choice.
https://www.elastotechgaskets.com/EPM.php

SBR we cant use, 100C maximum temp , too low.
https://www.elastotechgaskets.com/SBR.php

The ideal would be the Chemraz which is a FFKM family, for non crazy cold country. Only good to -30C.
https://www.marcorubber.com/chemraz-o-rings.htm
https://www.marcorubber.com/ffkm-o-rings.htm
https://www.elastotechgaskets.com/FFPM.php

What's been bothering me is the capability of even a DOT 3 service temperature, it is above 150C , for dry boiling point. DOT 4 is even higher.

By any design logic, the seal we use, must be able to exceed ( for safety ) the working fluid ( brake fluid ) maximum possible operating temperature.
In pressure based application, our hoses, pipes, tanks and so on will be 200% above working pressure of the gas/air we work with.
Our common scuba tank is rated at 3,000 PSI and its per 3 or 5 years hydro testing is at 5000psi and it wont blow up at 6,000 psi.

It is actually possible that Brembo uses FFKM seal for some of the higher performance calipers, I sure hope so.
At Brembo's purchase quantity, even the 44mm piston seal would be under US$7.00 each for sure, where EPDM would be under US$1.00 most likely.

Here is someone who tracks his car, a Camaro SS with a Brembo 6 pot and a track-use only brake pad . See the heat damage to the dust cover/boot. Not suprise though, dust boot dont get cooling as good as piston seal.

Here is a good explanation why track cars DO NOT use dust boot for its caliper's piston.

Fun learning indeed....

Sweet.

Need to find time to service my front calipers.
Till now I can't get the rear caliper seal kit yet, ATE brand single piston seal kit
