clunk from front end 2011 e350 wagon

the front end clunks over road imperfections, i feel it under the driver side front end. I jacked up the car and tested the wheel for movement and did a visual inspection but found nothing obvious. the car has 90k miles. i read that the front swayer links are somewhat more prone to failing, but they appear fine to my eyes.
Also, while during an oil change, I noticed a bunch of grime in the bottom front driver side of the engine, what are common leaks areas for the M272 engine? Are power steering pumps known to leak?
thanks for any recommendation.

The seal in the power steering reservoir where it connects to the pump tends to degrade and leak, looking like a PS pump leak. It's not a bad idea to replace the reservoir while you're at it since it's not too expensive.

The bigger source of oil leaks is the oil cooler seals. There's an aluminum piece that the oil filter screws into and an oil cooler bolted to it, both of which have seals that leak over time. If you haven't done it yet, definitely take care of it. It's not too difficult or expensive.

Most folks choose to replace the cam adjuster magnet behind the cooler while you're at it, since it's fairly inaccessible with the cooler in place. They leak oil into the wiring harness over time which causes ECU problems.

Check out the bushings on the control arms and sway bar. If they're cracked or damaged it could possibly cause a clunk. Check your ball joint too, which might be tough since it's compressed between the strut and control arms. Check the boot for tears. Make sure the CV axle is nice and tight and doesn't have play. It could be that a part of your strut is damaged too, like the strut mount. It may be worthwhile to pay a shop an hour diag to have them check things out if you can't pinpoint it.

I have replaced the front sway bar links and resolved the clunking issue.
the interesting thing is that the previous owner replaced them twice within the past 15,000km. a second set was replace within few hundred km as it was found defective according to one of the invoices I found.
Is it normal that those go bad so often?

Nope, not normal to go bad so fast. Original or aftermarket brand ?

The one I took out had no markings on so I am not sure if those were OEM. the ball joints were shot.

No marking means it is non genuine.

This is genuine, see below : Made by a Japanese company called THK. https://www.thk.com/?q=us/node/5219

Blue one is aftermarket by SuperPro Australia

Mine only torn boots, ball is still decent, no noise.
