clunk from front end 2011 e350 wagon
Also, while during an oil change, I noticed a bunch of grime in the bottom front driver side of the engine, what are common leaks areas for the M272 engine? Are power steering pumps known to leak?
thanks for any recommendation.

The bigger source of oil leaks is the oil cooler seals. There's an aluminum piece that the oil filter screws into and an oil cooler bolted to it, both of which have seals that leak over time. If you haven't done it yet, definitely take care of it. It's not too difficult or expensive.

Most folks choose to replace the cam adjuster magnet behind the cooler while you're at it, since it's fairly inaccessible with the cooler in place. They leak oil into the wiring harness over time which causes ECU problems.

Check out the bushings on the control arms and sway bar. If they're cracked or damaged it could possibly cause a clunk. Check your ball joint too, which might be tough since it's compressed between the strut and control arms. Check the boot for tears. Make sure the CV axle is nice and tight and doesn't have play. It could be that a part of your strut is damaged too, like the strut mount. It may be worthwhile to pay a shop an hour diag to have them check things out if you can't pinpoint it.
the interesting thing is that the previous owner replaced them twice within the past 15,000km. a second set was replace within few hundred km as it was found defective according to one of the invoices I found.
Is it normal that those go bad so often?
