Clunk when reversing at low speeds

Hi,

Have a MY14.5 E350W4M and have been experiencing a thump when reversing at low speeds. I got it diagnosed by a mechanic and he claims it is the rear driver's side axle causing the thump (He showed me the unsmooth play when moving the axle left to right as compared to the right side). Currently, it is occurring even when applying brakes lightly when reversing - without applying brakes it does not make the sound. My question is, how does play from the side to side necessarily cause a thump when reversing only? I have no issues going forward.

I have also regreased my rear pads and measured the pads and rotors and only supressed the piston on one side only; not sure if this would cause any issue related to the clunk.

It does not sound metallic. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

It definitely happened when you hit the brakes. Weird. Maybe get the rear end up in the air and start prying?

When you have it up in the air, check the u-joint on the front drive shaft. Just grab the shaft and see if it has any play.

also check that your brake pads are not rattling, depending on wheel design might not even have to remove wheel, prybar or large screwdriver try moving pads back and forth if you hear a clunk you know something is off, like clips that go into caliper could be broken or the main springs that hold the pad. although this would be a metallic clunk.

How do you move the axle "left to right" when it is still connected to the car?
