Clunk when reversing at low speeds

Have a MY14.5 E350W4M and have been experiencing a thump when reversing at low speeds. I got it diagnosed by a mechanic and he claims it is the rear driver's side axle causing the thump (He showed me the unsmooth play when moving the axle left to right as compared to the right side). Currently, it is occurring even when applying brakes lightly when reversing - without applying brakes it does not make the sound. My question is, how does play from the side to side necessarily cause a thump when reversing only? I have no issues going forward.
I have also regreased my rear pads and measured the pads and rotors and only supressed the piston on one side only; not sure if this would cause any issue related to the clunk.
It does not sound metallic. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?
