2012 Mercedes E350
Unhappy Need Second Opinion

Hello, my first post here is a bitter one, I am the owner of a high (144k) mileage 2012 E350 with the m276.
I took it in to get the common startup rattle issue fixed. Unfortunately, It is currently sitting at my local dealer, after being quoted 2k for chain tensioners, and later 6k to replace the cam adjusters, the dealer noted the vehicle is needing both camshafts and lifters (unknown if all or some) on one side of the engine.

Here are the photos

While obviously any type of pitting or uneven wear is bad, given the mileage, should I go through with replacing the cams/lifters? I understand the severity of having cams fail, but
that engine has 144k miles; I've only put 7k on it in the 8 months I've had the car!

Can I get some more insight! Thanks!

poor lubrication....

It's not just 4x camshafts... the aluminum heads have no replacable bearings for the dry steel shafts. Somebody drove that engine on oil fumes

4x camshafts

2 M276 engine heads

4x VVT

2x tensioners

4x oil solenoids

4x camshaft sensors

80% chance for "oil in the harness" neglect

No word about tired transmission...

Don't get robbed: add some engine snake-oil and trade it! Even my dealer says to ignore rattle, during warranty period.

++++ in addition : "bait and switch " BS ++++

The worse bank is the passenger one!
Showing you the wasted driver side engine head let's us imagine the passenger side. It always suffer first from low oil pressure caused by the amazing tensioners leaking oil pressure.

So that's $6k to just start engine restoration, when we don't know how much a new one would cost?
I am hearing on Sprinter forum that rebuild diesels are supplied by dealers for $8k

Yeah agree would look into price of rebuilt engine to throw in there. Gotta be cheaper then going the half way route, they will try that to milk as much as possible.

that sucks, I got my tensioners and check valves in the trunk as well was planning to get them done this thursday at my indy shop, along with some other routine maintenance. I am at 150k. Depending what you paid for the car and how attached you are to it, I'd button it up an resell or drive till it starts making some serious noise and swap the motor for a lower mileage one.
