wheels - 18x9 et30 offset fit? 255/40r18 or 245/40r18 18x8 et35

Hey guys, So I'm looking around at wheels and cant seem to find 8.5 wheels in a color or nearly a choice I like. It looks like I'll either be 245/40r18 on 18x8 a et35 offset which I know will fit. However there is also 18x9 et30 wheels, I could either do 255/40r18 or put the 245/40r18 on them, I'm sure the 245 will fit OK as it wont be as wide or wider than the wheels. but I'm unsure of the 255 in that size. whatcha guys figure.. I know they say fit a rim to tread width, like the 245 is going to be 8.5" in the tires I'm looking at (michelin as4), the 255 is 8.9". so If I put the 245 on a 8" wheel its slightly narrower but may handle just fine anyways. I'm not a track goer but we do have some windy roads I enjoy time to time and still want comfort which is why I'm sticking to 18" 40 aspect.

I am not an expert on wheel setup, but it is a geometry exercise (to me).

A given tire size, say 255x40R18 has a range of wheels that fit to. It is not a "I think it will work", it must be from its application sheet. Otherwise, the tire wall can be subject to different stress/strain that it was designed for.

The maximum width the car allows is based on the distance from the hub wheel not to rob with internal in the wheelhouse. That can be affected by the ET value.

For sure, I've read a few things. Read one guy say his steering was squishy when he put a 245 on a 8" rim, Michelin says 8-8.5, others say match the tread width with rim width, but in also thinking I'm sure it's gotta be fine to put the 245 on a 8" rim, I can't imagine it'd make it somehow much squishier. I'm not tracking so I may never know, but maybe it does make that big of a diff 🤷.

MY point is: it does not matter what a normal being (like you and me) says or thinks. This is an engineered part with an application sheet. If it is used outside specifications, your warranty is voided. It becomes at your own risk.

Do not get me wrong, I have installed tire sizes at my own risk in the past, and my tire installer then told me to sign the warranty away even for installation. He said: "if the bead breaks on the machine, you pay for the tire anyways".

Haha sounds like you've really experimented to get that told to you. I'm well within what the oem says for the tire wheel width so not an issue there. Was hoping for people's personal findings/feed back.
