Check Engine Light On and Off

Check engine light 2012 MBZ E350. On for a day, off for two days. Codes P0346 and P0347 - camshaft position sensor. Idles and runs fine. Wiring harness fine. Been going on for 2-months! Why doesn't the light just stay on?

Why not just replace the sensors? This is a VERY easy thing to do. Takes about ten minutes.

Bank two sensor. Easy to find? Don't have to remove intake manifold cover? OEM sensor only? Or maybe exchange with one of the four already working?

They're relatively cheap, easy to replace, and probably in need of replacement anyway. Just do them all. OEM or Bosch.

you may discover there's more to that fix than a new $50 CPS.

I am saying... oil in harness or shifted reluctor or limp tensioners or here CPS bad ECU.

Your best bet is always to be proactive with your Mercedes care.

I assumed he checked for oil in harness when he said "wiring harness fine", but perhaps not...

No oil on the harness. My friend came over found the actual values of both left and right intake camshaft positions do not match the the specified position. Also found the solenoids struggled to advance/retard camshaft timing. Time to remove the intake manifold and inspect basic timing of camshaft position. This might be more than just replacing the CPS...

Did ever have startup rattling, for how long ?

Brand new factory stock already struggle to time camshafts with low oil pressure.
Correlation codes are related and require cams
New VVT Gears and/or Intake camshaft may be needed.

Startup smooth. Idle smooth. Engine warm smooth. Light went on 2-days ago for an hour. Been off ever since.

No rattling... then VVT gears are locked right.

part time code... timing is borderline partly good...
I would guess old chain tensioners on low pressure.

I would still go to a Mercedes-Benz shop to have them check the codes . Why I'm saying this , I had seen an engine malfunction light on my W212 but a few days ago it went off. When I visited the dealer I had asked them to check the codes and they had retrieved a hidden code which I would have never been able to see with a generic ODB II scanner

Generic OBD scanners are a waste of money at best, and can be misleading and costly at worse. Use XENTRY/DAS or a Mercedes-specific Scanner.

For the price of two full tanks of premium a great scanner can be found on Amazon

One place said no oil in the harness, another said oil was in the harness but didn't give me the P codes. Wants $1500 for sensors parts & labor (oem for all four is $120 on Amazon). Takes 10mins to changeout each one! Light was now off for 4-days came back on for 1-day. Reset computer via negative battery post clamp removal 2-mins. Light off for 3-days....

That's a good deal from Amazon at $30 per CPS instead of $50Ea for authentic MB/Conti.
Hopefully CEL will comes up less often.
