My background: I’m a mechanical engineer with 56 years experience working on cars. I have a good knowledge of most auto systems including electrical. I also have four decades’ experience in global tech so I have more than a passing knowledge of computers.
In fairness, I have not contacted the customer support team of CarPutech. In their manual, they describe that most issues are setup issues and can be resolved remotely.
I installed the system and it did not boot every time. When I firmly replugged the connectors, it did boot every time. Then, I tried to set the resolution of the screen to match my NT 5.0. The manual does a good job of describing how to change screen resolution but my system would not function at the resolution of the NT system. I did as the manual prescribes and I set a new resolution and then backed out of the menu, shut the car off and then restarted. I tried every resolution and NT version without success. This meant I could not go back to the OEM screen and run my satellite radio or change the radio, nav system, etc. This was a deal breaker for me.
The physical install was tricky and not up to the fit and finish of Mercedes. The CarpuTech system is a Linux system and touch screen system. The engineers at CarpuTech created a plastic part that replaced the OEM bezel and it also holds the monitor. It was a good idea but the parts don’t fit. I needed to install the new bezel-mount with custom spacers. The end result was most of the ill fitting mount was hidden by the new monitor but as it was cantilevered, it would have bounced during a drive and I would have needed to adhere it to the dash. In a Mercedes? Ugh.
Then, the audio did not play through the Mercedes audio system. I suspect had I connected one of the two USB-A connectors to the Aux (USB1 or USB2) in the console, I might have been able to get the audio systems to work. There was no mention of this in the manual or videos.
In summary, for the price, this is a lot of hardware and software. The replacement bezel-mount is just not good enough to be in a Mercedes. Maybe CarpuTech could figure out the OEM screen resolution but I spent five hours on the install and removal of the system.
I’m interested if others had the same problems I did and how your resolved them.
