Speedometer Sticking Issue (2015 E350)

Hi folks, I just came into possession of a 2015 E350 and I see the speedometer sticking intermittently. Attached is a picture of the issue - as you can see, the car is off and the needle settled around 20. It is fully intermittent and I haven't been able to correlate it with temperature, or sitting periods etc.. Sometimes it works fine and settles at 0, and other times it sticks at random MPH - 10, 20, etc.. The digital readout on the cluster seems to be correct and corresponds with GPS speed.

I plan to pull the cluster myself while I am adding CarPlay and pop it open and investigate. I am a DIY'er for many things (I recently dropped my Porsche 996 engine to do the IMS and "while you're in there" maintenance) so I am not too worried about trying this.

Does anyone know the following?
1. Pin-out diagram of the instrument cluster connector so that I can connect it to a 12V source and test it on the bench - I believe applying 12V will bring the needle from 160 to 0 if it doesn't snag
2. Is this a known common issue? Could this be the gear around the needle ring, the gear motor, or something else?

I've actually gone ahead and purchased a speedometer pointer off ebay in case that's the issue, knowing full well it could be something else but I figured I'd try to be prepared: https://www.ebay.com/itm/324767949018

Thanks in advance!

Welcome,
Sorry not much help but I have not seen anything like that before .So, it's not a common failure at least to me .
I know weak batteries could cause weird issues . I would advise you to have it tested before going any further and post the results here as well .
Besides, it may be a good practice to check the codes and generic scanners may not show the faults unlike Xentry devices

Ya not a common failure. The only other occurrence I noticed was on a W205 C 43: https://mbworld.org/forums/c450-c43-...ter-stuck.html

UPGRADE sticky-lube to SILICONE!!

This is special: speedo gear-dial sticks at only 85kMi in 35°F cold temp.

large outside wheel gear
large outer wheel gear

You'll enjoy looking at a well built gold plated electronic module.

The question is why is your needle wheel sticking?
I think its related to that special grease that turns into genuine GLUE during evaporation everywhere it's in use... Pkg brake pedal!

Wipe the sticky MB "lubricant" to replace with a serious grease that survives well hot/cold environments... brake silicone lube!

i use that grease everywhere... like peanut butter
i use that grease everywhere... like peanut butter! 😉
Wide temp range: -50.° to +3,000.°F

no more headaches with glue properties.
