PSA Elring Gaskets Suck

I finally came to the realization that I don't care who is the OE for what part on what car if its not MB Genuine it's often crap. I own my shop and you know we all parrot the line "Mercedes doesn't even make parts, XYZ makes it for them" I've been seeing issues with Elring oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets on the BMWs, my personal E550, and the valve cover, transmission and oil pan gaskets on other makes. Theyre made in Italy/Germany depending on the vehicle and I cannot get these things to hold oil for 30k miles. The Elring BMW valve cover gaskets can leak almost immediately on install for the N52/N54/N55 engines. When youre doing the V8's which are a $2000 labor bill for BMW don't even THINK about it

The gaskets are often different colors, heights, and they feel softer than MBG. MBG also will often have installation tabs, bevelled edges, and theyre even different colors and country of origin every time. I know going to the big fancy Mercedes Benz dealer to buy only a $25 oil filter housing gasket sounds STUPID but its preventing your oil and coolant from mixing. We haven't had any catastrophic failures yet, but if I can even save one persons car I can sleep at night.

I have no agenda other than to save you guys time and keep your cars on the road longer and your driveways clean. Elring youre on notice

love you guys

Thanks! Good to know. I am beginning to wonder how many counterfeit parts are finding their way into the supply chain.

I find with lower cost items like gaskets that often require high labor costs or time, it is always best to use oem branded. The original gasket has usually given a predictable lifetime to be expected again. You never know what the aftermarket will provide especially when its a vehicle or part thats not sold in high numbers...meaning hundreds of thousands a year whereby high demand will create a better aftermarket alternative.

If these cars used aftermarket components OEM there is no way anything would last up to the warranty period. I've seen crappy CABIN AIR FILTERS from Hengst on this application made in Germany and theyre the ones who make the oil filters on half the Mercedes these days. (Flimsy, reduces flow, crumples on installation, plastic spacer falls out)

Did you know the Mann cabin filter and the MBG cabin filters for these cars by Mann are completely different products?

The NGK plugs for the M278 engines have different washer heights which are key to indexing them at the correct torque. NGK makes the oem plug for half the Mercedes fleet.

I wasn't trying to save money it's more about parts availability, this stuff is everywhere, MBG usually requires a bit more effort to source.

I haven’t bought filters from the dealer in a while, but have absolutely noticed that the mann are not the same as they once were. IMO the long life oils made of water have brought in all of the “long or extended life” filters. When recently shopping for my lx, the auto parts stores did not have one regular filter and all were long life…which apparently don’t filter as well. How on earth does a standard Mobil one filter no longer get offered other than misguided regulations.

I did buy mb plugs to avoid any issue with indexing but still had to file the washers to get them from 9 o’clock to eleven thirty/twelve (m157)

not to be a smartass but the indexing has an allowable range and its like 90 degrees but I understand within 45 is like super ideal. The LX are wonderful cars!

if you ever wanna experience the Amsoil power get in touch I'd love to hear your opinions. For all the vehicles really. Only Mercedes and the like have a published micron rating (25-30). Amsoil filters down to 20 micron on our branded filters. Signature series is PAO with ester and itll hold up to fuel dilution, turbochargers, and heat (theyre relatively great at keeping cool) we're messing around with 5w50 right now with great results

for the indexing it was a case of if I was going to take it from nine to ten, why not spend an extra thirty seconds.

reaching out is on my agenda after I get a warranty issue sorted…Thank you
