Switching from Direct to Indirect TPMS Using Launch

I'm at the point where, if I want to continue to use direct TPMS, I need to replace all four sensors (two are bad so far). That's $200 for the sensors plus labor. Not too bad. But what I'm thinking about doing is switching to indirect TPMS. This involves disabling direct and enabling indirect.

My question has to do with the menu choices in Launch. Under CGW/Variant Coding/Global Variant Coding I see 470/475 Tire Pressure Monitor Version, and the choice from the factory is 475 Tire Pressure Module (SA-mid Line). There's a 470 choice and then two others: No Further Selection and Not Defined. Which of those two should I choose to make it not available?

Didn't know there is an option there. Will need someone to look for the equivalent XENTRY entry to find out.

Good question. Indirect is the system of which utilizes the ABS to detect wheel spin differences in order to know if a tire's pressure is different to the other tires. This system does not use a TPMS sensor that reads the actual tire pressure.

Direct system is the system that has the TPMS sensors in each tire and a receiver in each wheel well recevies data then have it displayed in the vehicle.

TPMS sensors can be had for $10 or less each on Amazon. Yes, they are made in China. Yes, the will steal your identity and empty your bank account. Yes, they collect your DNA to be used against you at a later date. But, they are cheap.

Or, you could go with TPMS sensors from TireRack for $40 each. Regardless, I think it will be a much bigger headache to convert from direct to indirect monitoring, even if it is possible. I kinda doubt those type of changes could be done with LAUNCH or any other inexpensive scanner.

This thread is anecdotal evidence that the cheapest part of a Mercedes is the nut behind the wheel.

Find OEM sensors for cheap on ebay.
Done.

PS: it'd be helpful to know what model/year car is in question.

Actually... The collapsible crate was the cheapest, at least a few years back. I got an extra one for 10 CAD in 2022.

OK wait until you need new tires and then deal with it.

TPMS sensors typically last 10 years +/-, and batteries are not replaceable. As others have said, you can find them online for much less than at the dealer or at some tire stores. If two of yours have stopped working, the other two will follow shortly. Replace them all and save yourself time and money in the future.

Not sure about saving money since prices may drop in the future. However, saving time is almost a certainty. Regardless, we are not talking thousands of dollars at stake here, but rather less that $200.

Hard to say, especially with imported stuff and the uncertainty of when/if tariffs will be applied. But it's for sure if you're mounting a new set of tires, there's no extra charge for installing the sensors (my experience).
