E350 CDI Intake Resonator Pipe

I am in the midst of doing a B Service on my 2011 E350 CDI Blue Efficiency. I suspect 2011 is the first year for the "resonator" type intake pipe from the intercooler to the turbocharger. Today we took out the radiator fan AGAIN to be able to remove this pipe AGAIN to replace the fuel filter. I'll attach a picture to show what I'm talking about, but I have decided the best thing to do the NEXT fuel filter change is to cut a rather large chamber off the side of this thing and weld a plug in to close the pipe again. After that I'll be ale to change the fuel filter in 15 minutes instead of an hour (well, not really an hour, but still...)
So, are there really any downsides to me doing this?
Thanks, Glenn
