Re: e200 cgi vibrations at1800 / 2500 rpm
Hi
have an w212 e200 cgi with app 200000 km on the clock. it has some irritating vibrations durring driving at app 1800 rpm. it can be felt at steady crusing in the steering wheel or through the seat. if you increase speed a little, it goes away, but letting go of the throttle, it comes back. following has been done : 1 flexdisc changed. converter changed, motor mounts and gearbox mounts checked. nothing found.
it can also be felt in neutral when revs reach 2500 rpm.
anyone who has an idea please as it drives me nuts.

Maybe some more back story on the car so that other members can help............
01. You got this car used at what mileage and when ( what mileage ) was the start of the vibration actually happening ?
02. Or you just bought this car and found out it has the mentioned vibration ?
03. AA vs BB is the same vibrating intensity , or one is lesser than the other ?
Clues from you :
AA. it has some irritating vibrations durring driving at app 1800 rpm. it can be felt at steady crusing in the steering wheel or through the seat. if you increase speed a little, it goes away
BB. it can also be felt in neutral when revs reach 2500 rpm.
This is M271.8 CGI Turbocharged 1.8Liter , correct ?

i has been doing so ever since i got it. did not pay much attention to it at first until it was noticed by a passenger in the front seat. i am the second owner and have now done 30000 km in it. ( 20000 miles or so ) total milage ca 137000.
the intensity of the vibrations are about the same. yes it is the 1,8 ltr turbocharged engine. there are no other faults. when outside the rage of vibrations, it runs smoothly

Maybe try this engine being jacked up a tiny bit and you do the 2,500 RPM in neutral, see if the vibration is reduced by much.
.
The next thing to check will be your main pulley, which is a vibration damper ( harmonic damper ) and uses rubber and can "spin" out of its zero or its rubber goes bad causing wobble at certain RPM.
To confirm it is has not shift its zero, is to set timing to TDC or zero by that pulley and piston number 1 must also be at TDC.
M271.8 is a 4 cylinder engine and is not the smoothest engine, you need to know that. My friend has one in a C200 W204.
I hope you have a friend with similar engine and not the smoother V6 M276 engine....which has no balancer shaft, unlike M271 and M272 ( V6 )
Here is me marking my friend's M271.8 engine main pulley with white paint and red lines, for future inspection. Just in case minor shift occurs on this 14 years old car when in 2024. Car is a 2010 C200 W204.
This is engine mount teardown, if it can be any visual help for you to see how little room is allowed for the mount to sink and then starting to produce vibration.

18,000KM vs new
Good luck
hi
thanks for this very interesting explanation. highly appreciated. i will try and pass this on to my rep-shop and let them investigate the mounts further and the pully.
i will try and update this post, once we have figured out what is the cause of this. and yes it is not the smoothest of engines, but this drives mi crazy as there are no problems with it. so far so good.

Hi
a little update on the issue. went to another workshop to have it fixed together with a leaking thermostat housing and a defect temp-sensor. asked them to also check the gearbox mount. they said it looked a little worn out and i told them to change it. it now drives like a dream.
total bill incl labor and vat 500 usd.
