New Brakes on 2016 E350

I recently replaced my brakes and rotors. I am getting a lot of brake dust that make my rims look awful. Is this normal? If not what may have happened.

It depends on which pads you used. The factory pads (or equivalent) dust quite a bit. For low/no dust, try ceramic pads (Akebono or PowerStop Z23).

A few months ago I installed Akebonos and I'm still getting dust, but much less than MB pads.

You will see brake dust with new and old brake pads and rotors. The brakes work from friction of the pads pressed against the rotors.

Most cars come from the factory with semi-metallic brake pads and steel rotors. Great stopping power but they produce alot of visible brake dust.

Some people dont like all the brake dust and will replace the semi-metallic brake pads with a ceramic type pad. The ceramic pads are supposed to wear less while producing a lighter color dust so its less visible on the wheels.

I personally like how well semi-metallic brake pads work to brake the car and can deal with the brake dust by simply cleaning the wheels often. I keep a bucket filled with car wash soap and water with a dedicated sponge just for my rims. I'll go out to the car and give the rims a quick cleaning. If I dont feel like dragging the hose out i'll fill another bucket with clean water and pour it on the wheels to wash everything off after cleaning. Takes 5 minutes. Every few cleanings change out the wash bucket with clean water and more soap.
