One of the few things I thought looked really upscale and impressive in the Tesla S was the digital main gauge cluster, that you could customize on the go to show whatever you wanted...music cover art and song/title...navi stuff, performance, etc.

I especially like how the Es digital dash now has multiple skins.

The opinion that the more expensive finishes look better than the standard finishes? That's pretty much how it works. Did you expect Mercedes to break with a hundred years of automotive marketing and release teaser pics of the cheapest, barest interiors?

Not likely. Marketing 101. Just wanted to raise the issue for comparison sake. I was lucky and found a great deal on a off-lease bluetec with a highly optioned car w/ Designo packageand understand more than most that there is a huge difference between even a E with the leather option and the vast majority with the MBTex. I looked long and hard for one with the upgraded interior as I just couldn't see myself in a MB with what in most regards is just a high grade vinyl.

The main issue I have always had with MB is with how MB has to sell a premium brand devoid of what is now the new entry level equipment to get it most units to a price point that appears competitive in its class.

I agree that interior rendered in MBTEX, with the standard brushed metal trim, analog speedo and tach gauges and a smaller infotainment screen surrounded by a massive bezel is not going to stop any hearts.

Really, MB, Audi and BMW all cheap out on their base model interiors. Although I will say that however cheap you go on a 222 S Class, the interior is still nice.

Agreed - all of the German top of the line have wonderful interiors. I have previously owned a A8 and a VW Phaeton. Despite the dismal US market response to the Phaeton, it was a great car and its interior quality, fit and finish was second to none.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I have to ask... how does one buy a Phaeton?

I think it's an awesome VW but I just don't understand how you arrive at that purchase. If you're looking for a luxury car with a big engine how do you even get to a VW dealer? Did you specifically seek out the Phaeton?

For what it's worth, I own a Tiguan and I love it so I have nothing against Volkswagen but every time I see a Phaeton on the road (not that often) I always wonder how that happens lol

Well since they only sold a bit more than 3000 units in the US during the three years they imported them, clearly VW didnt know how to get someone to buy one either. The VW brand in the US doesnt make people think $85-100k (10 years ago), let me go take a look. The Phaeton shared much of itself with a Bentley at a fraction of the price (reportly VW lost $30-40K on ever one they sold in the US. Its still sold in the rest of the world today with 1-2 minor facelifts.

Anyway, I tend to follow cars that are unique and try to purchase when I find in the right condition, option list and at the right price.

The Phaeton was purchased as a 2 year off least with 20k miles. It had every option offered on the V8 version and was in perfect condition. I paid $34k (it had a sticker of $84k). I kept it right at 4 years and put on 60k miles. It was a wonderful car, but way to big. MPG also sucked. Sold it for $21k so monthly cost ended up about $275. Cant argue with that.

Accordingly some unofficial source, a digital cluster is an expensive option. So I agree most people won't like it and won't willing to pay for it. MB are smart to make it an optional and expensive.

I can say that after HUD, a cluster doesn't bother me anymore and having it a traditional and analog, it is what I want.

Virtual Cockpit is a £450 ($675?) option on the new Audi A4 here in the UK.

I dont think thats expensive. I'd certainly choose it over HUD which costs £900 ($1350) on the same car.

Ticking it on the option list should be a no brainer.
